They also used to pick one by shouting the name in unison, as if inspired by god.
"Do we have a Pope John Smith anywhere?"

Spoiler: Yes.  Yes we do. (click to show/hide)

So you know how "Benedict" isn't his real name, but is instead a papal name that he chose on becoming Pope? Well, now that he's not going to be the Pope anymore, I guess that means he'll lose this title. Does that mean we can start calling him "Ex-Benedict"?

Only if you happen to be cooking him. Under no other circumstances will that pun be kosher.

I wonder if this has anything to do with North Korea doing that nuclear test.

And now for your regularly schedualed even worse statement:
Can't really blame the guy. After all, pope-in' ain't easy.
Nah, pope-in's easy, it's keeping the news and the law from finding out about it that's the problem.

There's already a Facebook campaign to elect Fr. Guido Sarducci.  :P

Also found this joke:
Quote
Warsaw newspapers are reporting Benedict XVI's resignation as "yet another abrupt end of German occupation of previously Polish territory."

As to Turkson...I'm not sure the world can handle a black US President and a black Pope at the same time. Next thing you know, they're gonna find prooof that Jesus was Nubian, and all hell is going to break loose.

As a non-religious person, I'm baffled by the manner in which Popeifying is done. Why is the mouthpiece of a god an elected position? Can you write your local cardinals in an attempt to get someone elected that's closer to your values? Why the hell are they all so old? (inb4 flaming, I actually want answers to these questions. I'm legitimately curious.)

Father Jack Hackett would be my choice.

Used to be quite possible as long as you stuffed the envelope with enough cash. Favourite pastime of monarchs and dictators up until and including Mussolini or thereabouts.

Has the election ever been openly bought? The catholic church seems to have a shitload of money.
