Don't they usually serve until promotion?

Exceptions can be made.

Also, apparently for health reasons.

It would be generally better to have a Pope who isn't personally implicated in covering up child abuse.

Which is the traditional reasons for Pope to quit. Still, usually they wait for stronger health problems. Like death.

I really wonder who's next. Any contender yet? (Yeah, I know, the knews is only minutes old)

Well, that's what seems strange to me.  Has there been any news about him having health problems in the past few months?

According to the Senior Papal Correspondent talking head on the news this is apparently only the second time this has happened. Usually they cling on to the hat until rigor mortis.

So, who signs the approval for resignation as god's chosen representative in earth matters?

They had to dig out John Paul II's old pope-conveyor for the christmas sermon, although I think he managed to stay awake for the whole thing.

Well, color me surprised.

Yeah, he looked sickly as of lately, but still wasn't expecting it. The only other legal precedent is the dimission of Celestine V iirc.

I like to think they have a cavernous popecave where they keep all his little vehicles.  Think Batman.

Well damn. That's only slightly unheard of. If someone had just told me that, it would take a while for me to believe it. It's just one of those things. :P

Apparently the last time it happened was in the 1400s.  It makes me wonder if he resigned, or he was "resigned" for some reason.  All purely speculation though.

Quote
The cardinals assembled at Perugia after the death of Pope Nicholas IV in April 1292. Morrone, well known to the cardinals as a Benedictine hermit, sent the cardinals a letter warning them that divine vengeance would fall upon them if they did not quickly elect a pope. Latino Malabranca, the aged and ill dean of the College of Cardinals cried out, "In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, I elect brother Pietro di Morrone." The cardinals promptly ratified Malabranca's desperate decision. When sent for, Morrone obstinately refused to accept the papacy, and even, as Petrarch says, tried to flee

Best papal election.
