I don't even think it's red dye's fault, I've seen hair that was downright fluorescent that you'd expect off some nuclear coolant chamber that somehow worked and actually looked good. Orange is one I've seen consistently fail but red definitely can work. Just, not with them.

My experience has been that people can look like douchebags when you meet them (with tank-tops, absurdly colorful sunglasses, weird hair, whatever) and start looking better when you actually get to know them. It's about the learned associations.
