That's true to a much greater extent than you meant, I think. Just look at the comparison between different judicial systems - your average Joe hardly ever thinks about those, but they're hella divisive.

Well yeah. Libya has settled into this weird truce-like state, with only occasional flareups of violence. Assad certainly has prevented a similar situation in Syria.

Assad and USA arms deliveries, to be fair. Without mass ATGMs, the rebels would not be able to enjoy the recent string of victories they've had.

Assad has certainly shown himself to be gravely militarily and politically incompetent, though. Even if he wins, he's going to be removed from power shortly afterwards and replaced with someone who doesn't have a history of failure and meaningless violence.

The rebels were holding up well before the West started sending in weapons. The whole region is awash with arms after the fall of Libya, and the various Islamist groups have plenty of backers in the Gulf.

Theres no guarantee of whoever filling in the power vacuum being any less of a dictator than Assad.

Also, Sergarr, what does your government claim that Russian forces are doing in Syria? If they're up to no good, there are going to be consequences....... eventually...... somehow.....

Well, Assad's forces are still killing two or three times as many civilians than ISIS. Plus, after all the crap he's done (gassing civilians...) there simply is no way to negotiate a peace settlements with the non-ISIS rebels that keep him in power. He needs to go, that's it.

At this point, it's about the level of "we're totally not sending in advisers and arms deliveries", a la North Vietnam.
