So your position is that no amount of cash would be too much for the islands' defense? I mean, the current spending isn't too much, but let's say the UK got into an arm race with Argentina. How much cash would be too much?
Well, unless that expense threatens the vital interests of the nation, of course. And of course there's usually the option of ending an arms race by nuking the opponent

Well, its fair to say that the Russian Empire was technologically stagnant prior to Peter the Great -- I mean, that was his raison d'etre as Tsar: "Hey, I've been to Europe and seen a world where there's more to do than sit in our castles and get drunk on potato squeezing!"

Russian Empire had many problems, but Sergarr says that without glorious Stalin Russia wouldn't get mechanized agriculture, powerplants, antibiotics and so on.

Well, you know it is Peter the Great that brought potatoes from Holland to Russia, right? So it was more "I found this amazing stuff you can drink while sitting in your castles!".

It didn't get antibiotics due to American-Soviet relations being... Well the cold war
They developed phage treatment instead, and powerplants... Chernobyl

Phage therapy is really cool though. too bad most of the phage collections were lost during the Georgian civil war.

Well why would it get them? Russian Empire wasn't interested in helping "krepostniy" in any way. The ruling nobility would object to that. So the people would be still living in shit conditions. Just like people in Africa right now, Russian Empire would be like that, too. Shitty feudal state fated to be trampled over by other, better states.

Again, supply and demand - there was no demand in Russian Empire for meaningful technological progress
It is very funny nonsense considering that Russian Empire early XX century edition was among most economically powerful countries with rather modern industry.

Russian Empire had its own locomotives. Russian empire produced aircrafts. Russian empire produced internal combustion engines. FFS Russian Empire built its own battleships!

That powerful Russian industrial development of the early XXth century couldn't save the Empire during WW1.

Well, its fair to say that the Russian Empire was technologically stagnant prior to Peter the Great -- I mean, that was his raison d'etre as Tsar: "Hey, I've been to Europe and seen a world where there's more to do than sit in our castles and get drunk on potato squeezing!"

The penicillin production in the USSR was started in 1942, independently from American efforts. Not sure about other ones, though.

That's a false dichotomy. What if the Mensheviks had taken over? You'd've gotten the same developments, but without all the purging and torturing and killing.

I suspect that USSR was behind in antibiotics (and pharmacy in general) but not to the point of no own antibiotics.
Besides widespread vaccination is more important than antibiotics.

Stalin's era "kolhozniki" had much less rights than  even 19th "krepostniy". Peasants of early XX century were free. Many of them were landowners and as private farmers they would be as happy to get a tractor as American or European farmer.

But even Feudal lords would use mechanized agriculture because it would let them EARN MORE MONEY FROM THEIR FIELDS!!

That last bit is debatable. It's very well-established that both the Russian Empire and the Danube monarchy intentionally kept down industrialization by slowing the spread of railroads and novel steelmaking technologies for example. For them it was a choice between getting more money and preventing social unrest which would eventually threaten their power.

Germany went to war in 1914 because they feared growing Russian industrial power.  I dont think their fear was that 30 years later Russia would have a strong industry, I think their fear was more about 5 or 10 years.
