Scotland should hold a referendum to annex the north of England, that way the SNP could get more seats.

We should definitely ensure that Berwick-upon-Tweed South Berwick is returned to the fold. The North of England is too distinctive, however. They're not Scots, they're their own people/s. I would hope the Northern counties get some kind of autonomy.

The funny thing is that the Jacobites were Tories. How a word changes meaning over the centuries... I think Sir Walter Scott had a part to play in that. Nowadays Tories are basically establishment Whigs.

Then again the Confederates in North America were also old school Tories, considering they held the legacy of the Royalist Cavaliers in the English Civil War - the original English Tories. It's funny to imagine them fighting alongside the so-called "Scotch-Irish" considering they were descendents of Roundheads/Whigs. I suppose some of the Scotch-Irish were Union, weren't they?

If you want to see an example of an old school Tory in the USA (of the Scottish/English varieties combined) see J.E.B. Stuart. With a name like Stuart he's even descended from the Scottish Royal Family the Jacobites and Cavaliers fought to support and later restore.

All those... whiggamores and Wat-Tylerists? Eh, who cares what you call them! The peasants are always revolting, and they should be put down just the same!

I think this is a very accurate assessment of British political history.

Just split England up into ten 5-million-strong countries (like Scotland) and be done with it.

Call it the British Sovereignties. Or BS for short.

Oh yes. I would like to see a kind of Commonwealth of England, almost like the USA where instead of states they're all the traditional Counties. That would ensure a power is devolved across the board to the local communities. So it would be like a United States of England with 39 states.

Yeah, that'll get people to vote for that idea. "We'll be more like the Americans!"

:P I like it though.

Yeah no joke, this can happen during a single century, too. In fact, the current answers on key society problems of Republican and Democratic parties in USA is almost completely opposite from what it was in the last century. Somehow, during the 60s and 70s the parties have managed to switch places.

The average size of the English counties (according to a calculator I used) comes out at around 360,000, but in reality they're more likely to be between 700,000 and just under 2 million. The smallest would be Rutland with 37,000, and the biggest probably something like a revived Middlesex.

This has always blown my mind. It's amazing to think Lincoln was a Republican.
