Lol, just talked to a Muslim preacher in Oxford street who was a self-proclaimed supporter of ISIS. The funny thing is, other than that he seemed like a completely swell guy. Funnier still was that his preachbox was sandwiched by Jehova's Witnesses and an equally amenable Nigerian preacher preaching for jebus. You'd expect him to have more tact though; half expected someone to get v& for great terror
Knowing the current political climate, I am surprised some kind of UKIP warrior in power armour did not descend from the mother-ship in a drop pod to enact some politically correct administration of fist related correction.
Oxford Street's too posh for that

Well, there was another fairly earth shattering political poll in Scotland released yesterday. Lord Ashcroft, a former Tory peer, polled 1000 people from constituencies-of-interest i.e. Westminster constituencies that voted Yes to Scottish Independence and revealed that MPs with nearly 20,000 vote majorities ]will be toppled in May if the trends continue. He also polled Gordon and Inverness - areas that voted No to independence (although Inverness itself, the city I mean, voted Yes - just not the rural area outside it) and showed they would also go to the SNP, electing the former First Minister Alex Salmond to the House of Commons and toppling Danny Alexander, the UK government Chief Secretary to the Treasury, among other notable UK-level figures.

I have a summary here of the seats as taken from one of my favourite Scottish political blogs that cover polling analysis:

To put this in perspective - if this poll was the situation in the general election in May, the SNP would all but wipe out Labour from Glasgow at a Westminster level, leaving only Glasgow North East in Labour control. They would take Coatbridge - basically Scotland's answer to Southie in Boston (one Coatbridge resident fought in the 1916 Rising in Ireland) - which has been represented by a Labour MP (continuous and unbroken in representation) since 1935. I've heard people say that if the SNP somehow manage to get elected in Coatbridge, which voted Yes I should add, then they will personally wash the feet of the new MP because he's basically the Lord Jesus Christ.

Glasgow North East saddened me a bit, but we don't really have any decent local SNP up there ready to cope with the campaign they need to overturn Willie Bain's now-7% majority. That constituency needs more work, and really, I don't think they should have an SNP representative - they're much better suited to having someone from the SSP. To let you understand, even though Glasgow North East voted Yes by some majority, it has been represented by Labour continuously since 1922 with one short blip of about 4 years under a Tory, but only because a Communist stood there in 1931 and was so popular he split the Labour vote and a Tory sneaked in. "North East" Glasgow, to give a better name to it, is known to most Glaswegians as Springburn. It's probably the most deprived area in the whole of Glasgow, and also recognised as the most left wing constituency in the UK. The fact that the SNP are 7% off beating Labour there just shows the kind of earthquakes taking place in this country.

I should add finally, as I did during the independence campaign, that opinion polls are snapshots not predictions. I can only hope that the real election is somewhere close to this - but Labour are running out of time. They only have three months.

What the fuck Labour? SNP is already on the verge of consistent one-party rule, how can you be fucking up this badly?

There is no danger of them losing their stranglehold on us Welsh any time soon - no bugger is making in-roads to the old industrial valleys... Not even Plaid. Though, the Welsh assembly is doing an OKish job compared to Labour politicians elsewhere in the UK, TBH. If I were Welsh Labour's Carwyn Jones I would be rubbing my hands together with glee at the prospect of becoming a major part of Labours UK power base, quite frankly.

It makes a change from Labour one-party rule, anyway. Labour in Scotland and at a UK level were so blinded by their greed for power that post-independence vote that they backtracked on their promises for greater devolution. Their devolution proposals were the weakest of the lot - weaker than the Tories'. I think for that reason, coupled with a few others, the Yes voters who used to vote Labour have decided to give the SNP a shot, rather than just going along with the message Labour drummed into them i.e. that they should vote Labour because it's the only way to keep the Tories out. After those Labour voters took the plunge and voted Yes (around 40% of them I think I heard quoted) it was only a short hop over to the SNP. The message I've heard from most of them is "there's no difference anymore between Labour and the Tories, so I'll just vote SNP, why not?"

Now that it has become clear that the message "vote SNP, get Tories" wasn't working, Labour have decided to change the message to "VOTE SNP, GET TORIES!!!" - using twitter slogans and all the rest of it, as if Scots just need to be reminded of their hubris and then they will "come home" to Labour.

The issue for people in former Labour voting constituencies seems to have become one of "who would best represent Scotland at Westminster" rather than "who can we get into Number 10 Downing Street". Given the caliber of the current Labour politicians (Ed Miliband is less popular in this country than David Cameron) I don't blame them.

If anyone was incredulous at MSH's mention of "one party rule", well, take a look at this image, because it's how British politics may look after May:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Did you know Ed Miliband calls his party in its current incarnation "ONE NATION LABOUR"? In the sense that Tony Blair's party was "New Labour" etc? It's quite ironic, isn't it?

Damn Britishers and your red-blue inversion. I keep staring at this, going "But I thought Labour was on the ropes in England...."

EDIT: What's the orangish bits around the coasts and central Wales, Lib Dem? I'm assuming the forest green is Plaid Cymru, the pink is the Ulster Unionists and buggered if I know what the two other green bits are over there.

In this land red is still seen as the colour of Socialism.

I should add that in 2012 the Glasgow North East MP Willie Bain inadvertently gave his name to a Westminster voting phenomenon he explained properly for the first time, now called by pro-independence activists "The Bain Principle". He explained on social media, after being asked questions, that if the SNP ever propose any kind of motion Labour will refuse to support it for the simple reason that the SNP proposed it. It doesn't matter what it is - it could be on something Labour supports e.g. getting rid of the Bedroom Tax, abolishing House of Lords and so on, Labour will abstain because it's the grotty little SNP MPs putting it forward and any kind of Labour support for their motions only lends those nationalist nutjob extremists credibility. But yeah, that's the kind of party Labour are.

Orange = Lib Dem
Pink = DUP (Democratic Unionist Party)
Light green = SDLP (Social Democratic Labour Party - very, very moderate Irish Republicans)
Dark Green = Sinn Fein (Irish Republicans)

I think a lot of that map is from the last election (i.e. everything south of Scotland) so take it with a pinch of salt. You'll see a lot more red on it come May, and practically no Orange because the Lib Dems are going to get wiped.

So the Lib Dems' Faustian bargain with Cameron didn't turn out so well for them, I take it?
