I prefer to hero worship Brunel.
Though you could certainly argue that he was a racist, vain, self-important, British imperialist who profited out of the misery of mostly starving irish indentured labour.
But damnnit the man had steam for blood.

still don't understand why no Greek politician would just put out plan to surrender every bit of sovereignty to Germany, provided that the tax rate, subsidies, and government spending per capita must be on par from Kiel to Munich to Athens to Crete, or Greece be allowed to exit the  union with everything divided pro rata per capita.

If there is anything the EU should do it should be further integration, so every institution on Brussels would be equally applicable on every inch of EU land. One Government, One Law, One Budget, and non-nonrecognition of any language, religion, nor local custom.

Et Helvetica delenda est. They can become the European version of ACT or Washington, if a need be given to it. Their reserves should be enough for another two or three instances of financial crisis.

No writing or talking? It would be interesting, but I'm not sure you could have a working government under that restriction.

Fuck me. So ever since the Charie Hebdo attack, the Belgian government has been trying really hard to make a show of protecting us from terrorists. Mostly the measures they announced where a vague promise to reform the various branch of the state security apparatus and send soldiers in the streets. But a few more precise measure have been announced.

Most recently, they announced that speaking in defense of terrorism will now be punishable by up to two years of jails and a 5000 euros fine. Presenting an opinion "which aims to justify, present the terrorist infraction as acceptable or grossly minimize the impact of a terrorist infraction, thus legitimating the ideology behind the terrorist infraction" is now a crime.

Welcome to the Union of Socialist Waffles Republic I guess.

Is the government going to jail, then? I assume they can afford to pay the fine, but a two-year prison sentence sounds politically undesirable.

At least Belgium has a pretty good track record of surviving without a government -- things might actually improve when everyone's in jail.

Ah, you see, we can't put everybody in jail: our jails are already full.

Knowing Belgium, everyone will vote for themselves out of mistrust for anyone else, and some kind of weird direct democracy coalition will need to be formed from 11 million or so individuals.

Just build a large wall around the country and call it a prison. It worked with the Great Wall of China, right? It didn't.
