It could serve the same purpose as the "piss christ", pronographic movie about politicians and other offense agaist respected things : nothing is so sacred that it's a crime to tarnish it.

I think the same pf flags by the way. Forbidding the burning of the countrie's own flag is an idiocy.
Okay, so making a movie which portrays the Holocaust as something fun and laugh-worthy is totally allowed under that ideology, right?

...and Rawanda, and 9/11, and child molesters, yes.

Nothing is off the table.

EDIT:
Also serial killers, hurricane katrina, hurricane sandy, the republican party, guantanamo bay, mkultra, the tet offensive, slavery, the chicago fire, the antebellum south, stalin's purges, mao's purges, tiennamen square, rapists, the patriot act, sweatshops, child labor, endangered species, and dead babies.

You can make fun of anything you want, but you also have to expect people are gonna... not like it. :v You don't have to respect what they think needs to be respected, but they don't need to respect you either by the same coin.

Of course, shooting you for it is... unacceptable in the extreme.

Hey, I'm all for making fun out of inappropriate-for-making-fun-of topics.

There just a difference between Monthy Python making a nazi joke and some random totally-not-racist bloke making a nazi "joke".

I mean, bad humor can get you killed.

So, apparently, they would be in Dammartin-en-Goële, and they have taken hostages. Not much more info (isn't even confirmed it's the Kouachi brothers, but it's likely).

There are the RAID, GIGN and BRI, plus the army and police for security, and the Brigade de Recherche Criminelle (specialists for emergency criminal search) who have been investigating, it's the first time that they send pretty much everyone.

There is one reported hostage, the GIGN is contacting the suspects.

According to BBC's live coverage, contact with suspects have been made, they confirmed they have taken 1 person hostage and that they "plan to die through martyrdom".

 :-\

So the current story is like this::
It's been reported yesterday already that they robbed a petrol station and stole some fuel.
Today in the morning they broke the cover from wherever they were hiding (apparently it's a woodland area where they were located), stole another car and sped back towards Paris, a freking car chase ensued, were involved into a gunfight and finally cornered into a printing press building.

One thing I find interesting is despite their claim to die as martyrs, they are still alive. Either they are planning something truly nefarious for their last stand, or they are not serious and only just really desperate at this point.

Since they're professional soldiers, chances are their job at this point involves tanking everybody's attention onto themselves for someone else (the other members of their terrorist cell) to go hit some other target.

It's too late to hit a target, the strategy would be to bomb a public place first then move to your second target. The landmarks are so full of military now you'd go there to feel safe.

And honestly, they are trained for terrorism for sure but I start to question their intelligence. They might even have gone for the newspaper by themselves without orders to do so.

Dunno, Sergarr's suggestion, while horrible, sounds plausible. If we talk about the possibility of those two being members of a larger, well organized cell that organized the massacre with sole purpose of trying to draw attention from the real target. I mean, it is theoretically possible... but I'd agree that at this point, any such attack would face a heavily prepared armed force.

And yeah, I think them being just really well prepared/armed rather than a part of bigger cell and doing this attack on their own initiative is bigger possibility, but we'll see.

Why do many people here have such a boner for total freedom of expression? Some limits simply are sensible.
I like the German legislation on the subject: We have a crime called Volksverhetzung - getting the masses to hound a group, roughly.
I do not think this law would apply to Charlie Hebdo, but it does impose a reasonable limit on free expression: It's only okay as long as it does not disturb the peace by attacking others without reason.

I really don't see why you say this. No one is being "edgy".

There has been a string of attenta in France those last days. Journalist stopped saying it was the act of a "lone lunatic" the momen journalist got killed, as usual.
Here they say in the same breath that he said he did it for the children of Palestine and Chenchenia, and hat it's not a terrorist act.

Very suspiciously, two other similar attack occured, one in Bruxelles and one in Nante, but they "exluded that those were terrorist attack".
I'm all for protecting moderate muslims, but not by lying. Even less by making totally transparent lies.

Another unrelated gunman shot two policeman unprovoqued yesterday. He walked to them and opened fire.

+1 Helgoland, pretty much.

Meanwhile, some interesting info was released to public: apparently, the suspect contacted one of the French media and among the mentioned martyrdom thing also said they are the part of "Al-Qaeda in Yemen".

More interesting thing - one person arrived early in the morning at the printing press to meet a client of his or something. There, he meat a heavily armed person (which he assumed was special forces member at first?) with one civilian. He was told to "just go away, we don't kill civilians". He then shook hands with both and walked away.

Phmcw: huh, saying killing innocent people in the name of vengeance is not a terrorist attack (at least in this given situation) is... weird, to say the least. Also, speaking about yesterday's gunman - there is some talk about some connections between him and the brothers have been made by the police, but nothing clear yet.
