Today's newspaper had a medium-length article on Belgium's electricity issues - apparently 4 or 5 nuclear reactors that shouldnt be down are down for various reasons, the import capacity from France and Netherlands are at full capacity or near already and parts of the country(some cities) are advised to save electricity at certain hours.
How long as it been this bad, only now when the weather has gotten colder? Any signs of relief?
Damn, this happens in Europe too? Wow.
I mentioned it quite a few times. Short recap :
Doel 1 : Doing fine, but will run out of fuel in february. No new fuel provided. Reactor normally scheduled for decommissioning, though that might change.
Doel 2: Doing fine, but will run out of fuel late 2015. No new fuel provided. Reactor normally scheduled for decommissioning, though that might change.
Doel 3: Cracks in the primary reactor vessel. Not dangerous now, could result in problems later. Might restart first of april, next year.
Doel 4: Sabotage resulted in heavy damage to the steam turbine. Should restart 31 december
Tihange 1: Doing fine.
Tihange 2: Cracks in the primary reactor vessel. Not dangerous now, could result in problems later. Might restart first of april, next year.
Tihange 3: Doing fine. A transformer blew up last month, but that was fixed within 2 days.
Oh, and our last 500 MW coal unit went on strike, so there's that.
The media has been panicking about it for the last few months, but so far we haven't had any shortages yet. Nor any predicted shortages. We will remain import dependent, but we have been for the last few years. Barring a spontaneous failure of 2 more large power units, or a sudden cold snap across continental Europe, I don't expect any shortages.
