Absolute minimum wage here is apparently 5,95€/h or ~1100/month(before taxes), but one can receive more on top of that for living expenses, although I'm not sure how much. 150-ish€ a month or so. it depends on the field. Income tax is progressive from 0 to 37% and the exact amount also depends on net wage income, where the expenses for working such as daily drives or public transportations back and forth if they are long enough, related insurances, trade union membership fees and so forth are accounted for. So its possible to earn, say, 2500 a month and only pay 5% or so in taxes.

It's about 11 (Canuck) bucks an hour here in Ontario. It's provincial-level. It's also tied to inflation.

So basically we have what you want, Owlbread. A devolved minimum wage, tied to inflation.

And yet it's still not enough for many people to live healthily on.

It's what I want, yes, but my fear is that it's too low. In GBP that's £6.05. As Timferius notes it's not quite enough for many people to live healthily on even in a country where the cost of living may be different. At least the fact that Ontario has provincial-level devolution of the minimum wage sets a precedent and makes it harder for the UK parties to refute our arguments. After all, if Ontarians can enjoy it why can't we?

As a point of interest when I tried to use google to convert 11 Canadian dollars to pounds I accidentally typed "11 Ontario dollars to pounds". A portent of things to come, perhaps? Long live the sovereign Dominion of Ontario.

I know. Isn't it crazy that they can set their own minimum wage and we Scots, commonly regarded as a nation, are unable to? But as always exactly what a "nation" is is very subjective. I'm sure Ontario could be a nation if they wanted to.

For my fellow Europeans and even Americans and people from further afield, what is the minimum wage in your country?

It's $16.87/hr AUD here in Australia. Though it's less if your an apprentice or young. Not sure what that equates to in euros.

The state of Ohio's minimum wage is $7.95/hr, and not tied to inflation. Far lower than all the others listed here, and what's worse is that we are one of only 18 states with minimum wages above the federal minimum of $7.25/hr. 11.2% of my county was living in poverty in 2011 (which is actually better than the state as a whole but slightly worse than the national average.) The average yearly income after taxes is $31,000. The biggest employers in no particular order are the concrete, construction, and automotive industries.

I've often wondered what would happen if the Federal government dissolved and every US state (and native reservation) became its own sovereign nation. I predict that the states without nukes stored in their borders would get eaten by the ones that do (except Maine, which would probably try to join Canada.)

That's grim news about Ohio and the USA as a whole. It's a shame there's such a widespread antipathy to Socialism because you could do with some Socialist policies to improve the standard of living.

As for the great American dissolution of the Union I'm sure it would turn out fine and everyone would stay the best of friends, provided it was dissolved peacefully rather than over a particular highly contentious issue e.g. slavery.

dissolved peacefully

Not terribly likely, I'm afraid. And yeah, we could do with higher wages. It was an incredibly impressive feat to convince everyone who'd benefit that they would end up losing their jobs as a result.

Working class conservatives and working class right-wingers don't just drink the kool-aid, they mainline it. That said they remain a class of people that Socialists and leftists invariably fail to understand.

I'm surprised at Germany though.
We don't have a minimum wage, but the way the system works (under a certain monthly income you're eligible for welfare) it's not clear whether a minimum wage will make things better overall. In many sectors there are sector-specific minimum wages much higher than the proposed 8,50 Euro, low-wages are rather sector-specific too. The people who earn less now will benefit from the higher wages, but they'll lose their welfare eligibility (or their jobs if employers can't pay them more), so they might be off worse than before.

Ok, yes, that's it. Screw Quebec, let's start an Ontario Independence movement! Referendum 2015! The Ontario Block! The east and west complain enough about us, so let's up and leave! AHHHHHHHHHAHAHAHAHAHAH. Err, sorry, this is European politics, I'll show myself out...
