most people will greet you out in the Styx,
I wasn't under the impression it was the kind of place where people wanted to chat.

Yeah, you've clearly never been there; I do it on a monthly basis.

Seems to be really different in other places though, I remember a particularly hilarious incident where an exchange student from Africa tried to personally introduce himself to hundreds of people at the central university bus station, which caused quite a bit of confusion.

That's funny.

That's pretty impressive; even most agricultural deities only manage it once or twice a year.

There's the linguistic tidbit that Germans have no own word for 'small talk'. All we have is 'Geschwätz', but that's got negative connotations - it sounds like gossiping and unnecessary blabbering.

Would that not be "über dieses und jenes quatschen"?

Yeah, but that's not really an idiomatic phrase but more of a description of what is going on.

Ah yes, I get what you mean. You're right, I can't think of any idiomatic phrase. "Der Quatsch" would not be fitting, iirc that means something like "nonsense / bullshit" if not used as a verb.

In Finland it's actually common expression to call idle chit-chat (as in any non-important discussion) "spewing bullshit". Doesn't sound as negative in Finnish though.

Yes. We actually use the English expression "small talk", since there is no German equivalent.

Someone from Finland explained the difference in small talk habits between Finnish people and other Scandinavians to me like this:
A guy from Finland and a guy from Norway are drinking vodka. After three hours of drinking silently, the Norwegian raises his glas and says "Cheers!". Says the Finn: "Are we here to have a drink or to chit-chat?".

'Über dies und das reden' would be more natural, but it sounds a bit antiquated - and it describes a conversation at least a bit more intense than small talk, and a longer conversation too. You wouldn't 'über dies und das reden' while waiting for the elevator.
Example for its use: 'Oh, I've met a guy I hadn't seen in years - he was in the same class as me back in grammar school.' 'So what did you talk about?' 'Oh, über dies und das.'

But generally you'd use the phrase small talk to describe such a conversation anyway.
In Finland it's actually common expression to call idle chit-chat (as in any non-important discussion) "spewing bullshit". Doesn't sound as negative in Finnish though.
In German, we have 'labern' - it's a colloquial term for small talk among friends. I wanted to say colleagues, but that only works in German, not in English - 'bros' would probably be most accurate.

And Descan, we love talkative fuckers in Europe. You can talk in Germany and fuck in Fance :P

You know, I know one or two people who might interest you...

I think the interest would be one-sided, though. The dude's hetero AFAIK and the girl's in a pretty stable relationship.

But still, you could try~
