I've always wondered: if marriage is now gender-neutral, then why limit it to only two individuals? Shouldn't there be a movement to have an unlimited number of people in a marriage?

There is, it's called polyamory.

And if you try and be a jerk-ass and say "what about kids and dogs, why not extend to that" I will literally punch the word "rapist" into your forehead because obviously it means you've never heard of the word "consent" before.

What does it mean to "mentally able to understand"?

What is "understanding"?

And how can one infer that one truly understands something without dissecting one's brain?

Consent is a probabilistic thing.

You can never be sure that your partner has consented to the same thing you had in mind when giving the proposal.

That's why there are so many divorces in the world.

There's a reasonable expectation that adult humans are able to understand and agree to agreements, an expectation that doesn't exist for children or animals, unless that adult person has proven to be incapable of understanding for whatever reason.

There's also the counter-balancing idea that the state doesn't really belong in the realm of social policing and "You can't do that," style control.

So the balance would be if the "average" of that group is capable of consent, then the general group should be given the benefit of the doubt. If a specific member is found to be unable to consent (mentally deficient, drunk-as-balls [either gender], lied to or uninformed of exactly what is going on, etc) then specific action should be taken, otherwise stay off. And if the "average" of that group is deemed unable to consent, as in children or animals, then the general group is denied.

As for "You can never be sure," I don't agree. That's why you're supposed to communicate in relationships, you know. If you don't communicate, yeah you're gonna have some misaligned understanding.

Why should marriage be a government matter anyway? Just because Bismarck wanted to hurt the Church we don't have to stick with it 150 years later.
I say forget about gay marriage! Abolish heterosexual marriage!

The local parliament is actually going to vote for the passing of the gender neutral marriage law within the hour. Debate in the media has been heated for the entire week.

...yeah, marriage as in of the state-sponsored sort just like nationalism and a fair few other things are outdated and should be disposed of

it's got enough inertia though that i'm going to have to ask what you propose as a replacement, people are not going to let go of f.ex. its tax incentives easily

Tax-wise? Give out tax breaks for raising (not having!) children. Offer cohabitation benefits, maybe. Or just tell the people that they shouldn''t get money from the state just for publicly declaring that they llike to mush their genitalia together.

No, the reason people divorce is that their feelings change over time.
So, people stop being who they were and start being different over time.

Does that mean that all consent given by a certain individual would essentially be rendered void, after that individual has changed enough?
