I wouldn't call the last government "socialist" though. Sure, the Socialist party was in it, but so where all the right-wing parties.

Also, I love that picture from the post-marche clashes.

Yeah, sorry, it's centrist.

Then again, even centrists are left by international standards.

There is a increase of military activity in ukraine (even so that fighting never stopped, but it was somewhat low compared to this few days). It looks like ukraine is trying to push out pro russian and testing the lines. In the process several buildings dmg and civilians/kids were killed after the artillery strikes.

The artillery strikes are done on both sides, as they try to hit each other, so a lot of missed shell hit civilians.

What I don't get is that belgium is doing really good for 20 years now, compeared to our neightbours, so I don't understand what the fuss is about. Why did the flemish elect the NVA when we're doing better than France or England, and ithe debt has been much higher compeared to the PIB than it is now. Peoples act as we're headed for a crash but I see no reason to believe so, at the end.

I mean I do see imporvement that could help a lot, but no obvious signs of downfall, and I don't get the austerity we're being put in, especially since our credit rating is so high. You need money to make money after all.

Look here : http://epp.eurostat.ec.europa.eu/tgm/table.do?tab=table&init=1&plugin=1&language=en&pcode=tec00115

We lost very little in 2009 and have a good growth overall.

A little graph of growth :

Also, the French-speaking press and French-speaking politicians have been quick to blame the violence at that protest on "Dockworkers from Antwerp". What's in the Flemish press 10ebbor10?

It looks more to me that there being two different conflicting nations in one country is what makes Belgium so hot.

Meh, if we're two different nation then any other country is a patchwork of Aliens. The only really striking difference is the language, and it evolved this way recently. Originally, europe's elite spoke mostly french and Latin, and the common peoples spoke the language of their region. Flemishes coudn't understand each other two town appart, and nor could walloon. The language of Brussels was a mix of walloon and flemish, and the elite spoke French everywhere in the country.

Now, the social revolution also had a linguistic element since the current dutch was being cristalised in the netherland, and appealed to the worker as "their" language, instead of their french speaking masters (who were born and raised in Flanders). In Wallonia there was no "academic" walloon and no one did any, so the revandication never came.

But as some peoples are idiot, the original anger toward "oppressor that spoke french" turned into an hatred for "french speakers" and therefore Walloons, stereotyped as parasites of the wealth of flanders.

Culturally, Walloon and Flemish are very close, and act more or less the same. I guarantee that there are more cultural differences between Provencals and Chti's than Walloons and Flemish.

"Sure, give me a sec, I'll go and grab my cobblestone.

"Hey bud, your mum said to pick up groceries on your way home. There's money in my car over there."
"O.k. dad"

"Hey, the director wants you to lie down a bit farther to the left, near the other extras."
"Ah, o.k."

"How are we doing here? Need anything? Can I bring you some tea? A sandwitch perhaps? We've got some by the cars over there."
"Nah, I'm good. Cheers."

"Hey kid, I've got ice cream. Wanna get in my van?"
"You betcha mister! Can I have vanilla?"

Most press mentions a violent sub-group, but don't really identify it. You can find references to the antwerpian dock workers, but no emphatization. A few quotes of union leaders stating their protest was infiltrated by hostile elements, and some blaming the police, but jothing spectacular.

Of course, some less credible sources do indeed emphatize neo-nazistic Antwerpian dock workers supporting VB.

I'm really scared of the way everything in the country seems to be seen through the language prism. A couple months ago, it was announced that we had a risk of blackout this winter. Of course, immediately cries in Wallonia saying we're going to be targeted more than the Flemish. And it's the same for basically every single issue, which preclude good government. This change in tone is the reasons I think Belgium is dead.
