The prices on food in Russia are apparently lower that the USA ones, seeing as folks in Russia do not need to rely on "food stamps".

No really, the prices on food in a supposedly back-water country, only recently gaining enough internal agricultural production for export, are comparatively lower than in a country which is a major food exporter and a world economy #1.

This is so utterly ridiculous, that I can't believe that. There must be some trickery involved. It cannot simply be. The USA economy can't be that fucked up.

Just gonna put it out there: Not having food stamps or an equivalent doesn't mean you don't need them, it just means you don't have them. Perhaps you don't. Perhaps, instead, you just don't care, and instead of being fed with food stamps, they just aren't fed.

I haven't heard of any mass starvation in modern Russia. Not in Russian pro-government media, not in Russian anti-government media, not in Western media. In fact, there's the problem with people getting more fat on average.

It's not a new thing that food costs less in the developing world.  The opportunity cost of labor for food production is lower so the cost of food production is lower.

I haven't heard of any mass starvation in modern Russia. Not in Russian pro-government media, not in Russian anti-government media, not in Western media. In fact, there's the problem with people getting more fat on average.

Very likely, obesity is a big problem with the changing diets of the post-industrial world.  That still doesn't mean that poor nutrition might not be there.  IIRC the studies show that cuts in food assistance generally increase obesity.
