It's what is meant that I'm more concerned about. That may be what it means to some people, though not to me personally as this is the first I've heard of it, but I doubt she maliciously went out of her way to insult people.

Then why say anything like that at all? If she didn't want to insult the Thai lady, then referring to her as you would any other person would be the sensible option. To me the whole "from somewhere" thing smacks of "oh, look, someone who looks like they are not from around here" style xenophobia.

I have no idea why she would call her "Ting Tong" if she wasn't making reference to the sketch. You had no idea what it meant in the first place, why are you still trying to apologise for her?

Mr Munday said "ting tong" in Thai meant that a person was mad and the comment had come as "a bit of shock".

"I don't think UKIP are a racist party, but that comment certainly wasn't the brightest thing I've ever heard," he said.

As said, there's another meaning behind it.

Tell me on a scale of 1 to 10 how likely it is that the UKIP MEP would actually know that "ting ton" means mad in Thai?

Are you suggesting that UKIP MEPs are somehow less knowledgeable?

No, I'm asking you how likely is it on a scale of 1 to 10 that the UKIP MEP would understand Thai language well enough (a very rare thing in Britain, I've never met someone who speaks Thai) to use a phrase like "ting tong" in an off the cuff remark, specifically meaning mad? Rather than it being a common reference to a sketch show which practically 85-90% of the British population would recognise?

As likely as anybody else. I can't particularly tell whether or not your estimation of how popular the sketch was without having heard of it, but regardless it is not blatantly obvious she was being racist.

The BBC for one made no mention of it being racist, nor made reference to the sketch, and the people involved considered it "Outrageous" but not racist.

Right Dwarfy I'm just going to stop now, this is getting very silly. I can see that you're going to bend over backwards, logically and morally, to accomodate this woman's racism so there's no point in arguing. Luckily the British public won't be bending over backwards any time soon.

Owlbread, don't be condescending.

Do not treat me as if you think me a child.
What I would bend over backwards for would be to not patronize someone, nor to call what someone says "Very silly."

"Many Ukip supporters"
"The Labour frontbencher said "a lot of those" who voted for Nigel Farage"

Very definitive.

Okay, so if she did know the meaning of the phrase then she's calling someone else essentially, "A nutter from somewhere." Well that's a load better isn't it? Flippantly insulting other politicians is just the thing we need.

Though I am also of the opinion it was just racism, not a casual use of Thai phrases.

And I am of the opinion that, either way, it's not racism. If you judge racism as thinking one race is higher than another, then she gave no signs of that whatsoever. Either way, it was an ill-worded thing to say. Amendment: I posted that too quickly. It is possible it was racism.

It's very hard not to treat you like a child when you're being this naive.
