Spoiler: In reply to Helgoland (click to show/hide)

Here is an interesting snippet from an article in the Financial Times about Scottish independence and the possibility of Westminster playing down our potential oil supplies:

Ok I propose a deal:
Russia gets:
-Security Council membership
-The most nuclear weapons in the world
-Membership in the G8, specially expanded to include Russia
-Host the Olympic games
-Host the world cup
-Military drill partnerships with NATO
-Normalization of trade relations with the west

Russia promises:
-To not invade it's neighbors and act like it's in the goddamn 21st century
So pretty much this, but to expand upon it, let me explain the actual general thoughts and opinions of those in the west and the US in particular. Russians will likely find this offensive, because, quite frankly, it is rather offensive. So here goes:

We don't care about Russia. Russia isn't our rival or enemy. The USSR collapsed, which bloody well meant we won the cold war. We don't want to revive the cold war; and why would we? We already won. The USSR lost. The winning party in a war doesn't want that war to start back up again; that would be an affront to national pride and the ability to talk about how much better they are.

The west sees Russia as a backwater, barely hanging on to its waning power from the days of the USSR. A country sliding into irrelevance. The west looks down on Russia as it would any bothersome third world country deigning itself their equals. This, above all else, is why the whole 'west is trying to restart the cold war' shtick falls flat immediately anywhere but Russia. In general, we don't even view Russia as a worthy adversary to start a cold war with any more than we do Iran.

And it's reflected in the actions taken. A few minor economic sanctions on individuals and harshly worded letters. It wasn't even until Russia was accused of murdering an aircraft full of western civilians that it became actual widespread economic sanctions. There isn't any serious talk of invading Ukraine, nor major buildup of forces for any potential invasions. There was no action taken over Russia's Syria involvement, nor pretty much anything anywhere else. If we actually wanted to start a cold war, it would be with China, not the dying embers of power in Russia.

Are these sentiments offensive? Hells yes they are. But all in all, I think they sum up the unstated views of most in the west; or at least those in America.

Hey - the first word was just for flavor, and the second one is intranslatable, with its meaning being apparent from context. Wenn ich Deutsch sprechen würde, sähe das so aus.

"Inherited-hostility-hood". That took about five seconds to translate. In less direct words it's called a blood feud.

The Wikipedia article is "French-German enmity" and while that's more descriptive of a general state rather than a specific word, I think it gets the point across. Which is what language is for.

Nah, Erbfeindschaft has a different connotation. You'd need a word that reminds the reader of Wagner, really. 'Enmity' could be between anyone; only the Germans invented such a pompous name for a concept as simple as not liking each other.

Erb - Inheritance
Feind - Enemy, Foe (Compare Fiend)
Schaft - State of being [the word it is suffixed to] (In Dutchling's Dutch this becomes the word -heid, which is the same as the English -hood)

Erbfeindschaft - the state of being hostile through inheritance.

That's a blood feud. That's exactly what it translates to - a blood feud between countries. You don't need anything else than that.

And in the next episode, Scrib explains how Schadenfreude translates to damage-joy.

In Dutch it's suffering-amusement (leedvermaak). Much more fitting imo.

Do I need to point out that this stems from Helgoland saying the word is "untranslateable"? I mean, I can claim that "lagom" is untranslateable because you can't transfer the details and social aspects, but at the end of the day "just enough/just right" is a perfectly usable translation of it.

Also in Swedish it's skadeglädje. Injury-joy.
