Considering what they go through their pay is not good enough. From what I can find in 2006 the basic pay before tax of a private of two years in the British infantry was £15,000. I can't find enough information about the current wages but the army website claims "at least £17,000" which still isn't enough for a 16 hour working day, every day of the week in conditions that could lead to their legs being blown off.

Not good enough. Secondary education should be free for everyone anyway.

It's a terrible thing. People are just seeking a better life in Europe which is completely understandable considering where they're coming from. I think the answer is to make it easier for them to travel over and work here despite coming from outside the EU. If transport can also be provided for them, or made legal, then that will take things out of the hands of the people traffickers.

US has a military budget that is larger than all other countries combined, and US is the NATO's leader.

The US is all over the place militarily, has all sorts of fancy expensive equipment, and is separated from Europe by the second-largest ocean on Earth.
Plus the wages in Western countries are way higher - raw numbers mean little when talking about military power.

Actually, the Secretary-General has always been traditionally a European, as in he leads it. While the Supreme Allied Commander Europe has been an American. So we should leave all defensive and interventional means to the US? That is an excellent idea and tell me why should the US stay in NATO if the other member states keep their contributions to the bare minimum? Maintaining NATO is expensive.

Being in NATO does and should give every member state responsibilities and duties. If you want collective defence then you should very well contribute in what NATO is doing or support other member states, otherwise there is no point for NATO.
