It's not the type of thing to joke about.

Considering for two years in a row we've made April Fool's day jokes here about the start of massive, bloody world conflicts (North Korea last year, War in Ukraine this year) I don't really see the problem. I'm sorry it offended you so deeply but I struggled to find a better example. Perhaps I should have chosen Rudolf Hess?

Changed accordingly as Hess seems to be a less contentious figure. Somehow.

Perhaps I should make clear that the Scottish nationalists are routinely derided as "Nazis" and "National Socialists" by knuckle dragging elements of the opposition and the most ardent Unionists. One former Conservative leadership candidate recently criticised the SNP's move to make the Golden Eagle our national bird as being indicative of the SNP's inherent Nazism, while a prominent/leading Scottish Labour politician called the SNP "neo-Fascists", and the most virulent Better Together activists often draw the SNP party leader Alex Salmond with a hitler moustache, see the picture above.

Utter bollocks of course but maybe that will put this seemingly strange diversion into WW2 jokes into perspective.

Over the last centuries, hundreds of thousands, possibly millions died in nationalist struggle for independence, from the wars of decolonization to Timor-Leste. In every case, the original country was just too afraid to let go, to afraid to challenge the statu quo, no matter the people's grievance. In September, Scotland will have an historical opportunity. A democratic referendum with no recent history of violence, no coercion by armed group and no hatred for the rUK. If the Scots vote yes, it'll set an historical precedent that separatism is not something to fear, but something that can benefits both side in peace.

Of course this is for the Scots to decide. But I hope they'll decide for Yes. Saor Alba!

And here we go with the "Sweden-Norwegian and Czechoslovakian dissolutions never happened" mantra again. Seriously, stop acting as if this is a first.

Czechoslovakia was different as it was more of an equal divide and less of an independence. Plus it happened at a very special time too, and without a referendum.

Norway and Sweden weren't even part of the same country, it's just a PU that broke.

My family, though they have very working class (even impoverished) roots, have always tended to be "well spoken" (to use a phrase I dislike).

Despite the fact that my mother was pretty damned poor growing up in Middlesex, making her own dresses and such, she took speech classes as a teenage girl because she "didn't want to be a cockney" and as she raised me she spoke to me with perfect BBC English. My father's speech was influenced by my "well spoken" grandmother who was in turn influenced by her "well spoken" grandfather, the son of English immigrants.

So in that sense you can see why when I type it may sound like that, but if you heard me speak uninhibited you'd hear me using a lot of Scots words and pronunciation. I listened to my own grandfather as much as I could to adopt his accent and he was probably the greatest Scots-speaking influence on me in that regard.

In other news, I'm keeping an eye on this rather interesting situation that is unfolding in Northern Ireland around the arrest of Gerry Adams, President of Sinn Fein and figurehead of the Irish Republican movement in Ireland. He was arrested over his alleged part in the murder of Jean McConville, a mother of 10 "disappeared" and shot by the IRA for being a suspected informer. Witnesses claim Gerry Adams was the man that gave the order as a local IRA commander. Adams denies this, claiming this is all a conspiracy to disrupt the election campaign he's currently taking part in.

All very wild stuff. I wonder how this will all pan out.
