They cheated their way in by submitting sugarcoated numbers. Throwing them out is however quite controversial and very unlikely to happen, that would totally be against the spirit of what the EU tries to be.

Well, I wouldn't really say they benefited. Well, the corrupt political elite did, of course, but the rest of Greece is now experiencing the pleasantries of the Troika.

Though the Troika might be gone soon.

Psssh, everyone knows the "corrupt elite" are the only ones that actually matter in Greece!

Maybe you guys can just kick them out? Like, individually? ;)

I'm afraid that would be an infringement on national souverignity. We can only tell the political elite to kick themselves out, which so far hasn't had much results.

But wait, isn't infringing on national sovereignty the point of the EU?

The EU is weird, let's leave it at that.

I wouldn't be surprised if Canada is taken seriously as a "EU-Member" at some point in the future, it's -that- weird.

Honestly, it'd probably come out to something like the UTAN -- United Trans-Atlantic Nations -- if there was a serious merger of that nature. Kinda' be surprised if there's not something along those lines either proposed or in use, actually. That acronym looks familiar. Maybe something regarding hemispheres if russia and co' got ate at some point. Then eventually you've got the terran hegemony and wheeee.

Although I cannot help but feel that Orban's latent irredentism doesn't help. They don't want an autonomous Szekler parliament calling in Hungarian troops. *cough* Crimea *cough*.

I really don't know what you mean by Orbán's latent irredentism, the closest I can think of is that he likes to do shadowboxing with the EU.
Also the Crimea parallel doesn't make sense, we neither have the military power for that nor could we withstand the international sanctions, plus it could easily result in the neighboring countries ganging up on us.

I'm a wee bit drunk, so I'll answer something, but I just wanted to point out a statistics I read recently: the US subsidy for military supermarket is bigger than the whole budget of the Hungarian army.

Why not? Except for geography. And a possible US invasion...
There's even a bit on wikipedia about this IIRC.
