Studying Burns in an English Literature class. It just gets worse and worse. But yes, I take it you read his translations? Did they introduce him as an Englishman?

Of course we learned of him as part of English class. At least in Sweden, "English" class includes introductions to almost every big English-speaking region/culture out there, not just England. Scotland, being Britain, part of the UK, and having it's own football team, of course gets particular focus. Where else would we learn of British poets?

I'm okay with Scottish literature being discussed in English classes, if only because a good deal of (internationally known) Scottish literature is published in English.

Now, if Scottish history was (only) mentioned in English history class (and only in relation to English history) then THAT'S an issue.

It's far better than not being mentioned at all and assumed to just be another part of England with another funny accent, which is what not mentioning it as part of English class would mean for the general public and everybody who didn't choose to study the UK/Scotland/Scottish on a higher level.

Edit: I realised "English language" class might not be the same as "English literature" classes, but over here, unless you specialise in literature, you're not going to study literature except as part of language classes, and Swedish classes only touches on the most famous if international writers and poets.

As in, the only mentions of Scotland are where Scotland impacts on England. Not Scottish History in it's own right.

I suppose I'd be okay with (actual) Scottish history being taught in an English history class, if only because a lot of the time, when people say "English", they mean "British". That's terrible in it's own right, of course, but under that understanding it's not horrifying. Of course, one would hope a teacher would understand that English =/= British, at least if they're teaching it.

We had a topic about Scotland in our English textbooks that described its geography and culture. I can't recall any historical material about Scotland in our English language curriculum - most materials about history of Britain in our English textbooks were pretty rudimentary. I remember there were topics about William the Conqueror and the history of London. When British holidays were described, Hogmanay and first-footing were always mentioned as separate Scottish traditions.

I am very, very impressed that you learned about first footing. It's a tradition that is fast dying out, I'm the only person I know that actually does it.

My formal education about Scotland during school amounted to "Yea, few of 'em came over. Guess they didn't have a high crime rate. Not like them Irish, got plenty of 'em!"
So you know, getting a mention is doing better than most European nations. I'm sure few people here could find Croatia on a map...

The only official education I got on Scotland was the Acts of Union officially creating the British Empire. I wasn't actually sure where Scotland was until my mid-teens, as I had heard the name many times but could not find it on a map for reasons that should be fairly obvious.

Yeah, but then I don't think anyone outside England or college got "English history class". You got segment on England in history class, and historical stuff in English class, but why would you have a course dedicated to studying the history of one specific other country?

I didn't exactly get an English history class, but there was some basic pre-US English history due to them being our progenitors. Same for the major Native American cultures.
