[Sarcasm] Sure. Using riot police to disperse crowds that went violent  and doing the same against people that dare to to practice public clapping is equally undemocratic [/Sarcasm]

My general freedom yardstick is "If, in public view, you can burn the national flag of the country you are in, things could be worse."

Once you can't burn flags you know your government is using peoples patriotism to get away with what ever bullshit they want to pull.

Sometimes, you Euroforumites really disturb me with the lack of appreciation for protection against arbitrary detainment.
I have enough paranoia and moral outrage to scrutinize both.

So what does it say that when rioters were burning American flags in the street no one cared, yet when those same rioters tried burning a McDonalds sign a counter-riot was instigated to save it?

A healthy respect for individual rights such as ownership laws. After all, it is your own flag to burn, but that flag belonged to a franchise! /delirium

It says that when fat people protest, it looks like there are more protesters than there really is because they take up more room per person.

So why are you so upset that Putin is detaining those 700 hundreds?

It rests on who those 700 are doesn't it?

Does it? What sort of qualifier would you apply to filter out who it may or may not be justified for?

I'm guessing MSH is pissed off because Putin did it.

I can sympathize, Putin can go suck a dick.
Actually it would be pretty good for human rights in general if he did.

Depends on whose dick it was, probably

Best Korea is Best Derail!

More seriously, I hate Putin with a passion, but there is plenty of better reasons to hate him than "He locked up suspects after two terror attacks."

I think this all rests on who the 700 are, something we will never know because Russian Security Services are so powerful and secretive that they can basically poison people and nobody will care.

Obviously if it's 700 random muslims it would be a different thing than 700 people known to have connections to islamist terror organizations.
Also depends if it's "taken in for questioning" or "dissappeared in Siberia".

By comparison, arresting people for a short time seems normal. I've been to protests were everyone (Around 400 people) ended up arrested. (My slip read that I was arrested for being suspected of having the intention of committing a misdemeanor. No kidding) Spending the night in a police station is the price to pay for anything more than a peaceful, organized, authorized march.
That's how our Belarusian police usually deals with unauthorized and authorized non-peaceful opposition protests.
According to EU and American media, that's incredibly undemocratic.
I'm pretty sure this it the way the US and EU deal with protests too, with an added order of tear gas, and riot police, if needed.
Except when something similar happens in Belarus, the whole progressive mankind starts condemning the horrible violation of freedom of speech in Belarus.
Quod licet Jovi, non licet bovi...
The difference is that while all that can happen here too, you are usually not detained for very long and - most importantly - if you feel mistreated you can try and sue the shit out of the police and the government. Overtly aggressive police behaviour has cost a lot of politicians their job and career, while in Belarus this is what politicians build their careers on.
