Same for Wales, we have a similar number of subdivisions, but everyone simply ignores those, despite the extreme geographical seperation of north and south.

Although Scotland would have much more than the six I referred to if we were to go by the old counties. It really hurts my head when I look at a map of our historical counties:

If they weren't just splotches of color, you could probably count individual buildings on that map.

You can resize it though. Not sure how. I did it twice before but I forgot how :P.

Actually it would be very difficult. Though Scotland is small, we are not that small. For instance you'd have a hard time around the "Lanark" area because the population down that way is approaching 1 million.

To be fair, by squashing Britain, they made it look more dwarf-like. This can be good or bad.
Good or bad? Neither; stupid. I like that one novelty map centered around the Aussies, the UK 'looks' smaller despite being the same size as the one on the standard map. It really is just small, only we don't notice it.

Why the heck does everybody feel the need to have so many subdivisions? The US has about 50 of the, Scotland apparently has more than I care to count. I don't get it at all!

We have seven. Five states and two mainland territories, and one of them is only there so that our capital would be in neutral ground... And even still we have people saying that states have too much power and things should be moved to a federal level to remove bureaucracy! How do you manage that many?

We actually have 32 regional authorities, which are the biggest subdivisions we have. That's even with all the reforms that cut away most of the other historical counties and such.

I would love it if Canada got rid of a few of it's subdivisions. Adjusted things along economic and cultural lines. Manitoba and Saskatchewan could link up, they're pretty similar. The Maritimes (and maybe Newfoundland) could be a single province, they're also pretty similar.

Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia are already pretty hefty and big and seperate enough in their needs, the smaller provinces need the clout and focused resources.

And yet little Cape Breton Island has secessionist aspirations, does it not? Or provincialist, if that would be the term. The problem in Scotland was that we did actually unify everything into 9 regions with their own "districts", such as the monolithic Strathclyde which had 19 districts. It was split back into god knows how many counties.

To make matters worse all of our Scottish parliamentary constituencies are extremely vague, stuff like "central Scotland and Fife" is a constituency, as well as really old places nobody hears about anymore like "Clydesdale", but those Scottish parliamentary constituencies do not correspond to Westminster ones. For instance the Westminster constituency "Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey" is a large area slap bang in the middle of the top of Scotland. It spreads across much of the South East of the Highland Regional Authority, but in turn in the Scottish parliament it is split into two, namely "Inverness East, Nairn and Lochaber" and "Ross, Skye and Inverness West" which actually spreads to the coastline and includes at least one large island.

Depending on what they want (Cultural autonomy?) it could be possible to have provincial subdivisions that cater to those factors while pooling the resources and giving a shared voice to the rest.

Or funding from the province for cultural expansion in regions that Nova Scotia or PEI or New Brunswick couldn't afford, but The Maritimes could.

No. No, the moment we try to band together, we'll lose what little power we've got already. Ottawa will use the opportunity to reproportion our seating in the legislature, we'll no longer be four votes when the provinces are called in to vote on something, and as power continues to funnel west it already feels like no one understands our current situation and are actively changing Canada's policies to fuck with us.

The only reason we would ever do something like that is in the event of Quebec's separation. We would have to band together to make ourselves attractive enough for the US to court us as a state. Right now, we're better off as separate voices.

Back in the very old days, the Scottish "regions" and their districts were as close as we had to an independent parliament. Those vast, monolithic entities with similarly monolithic governments were our chief governors. Those who governed Strathclyde were essentially Scotland's governors, and that happened to be Labour 100% of the time. Labour ran those regions like fiefdoms, lording over us. Thank god they're gone.

Using outdated parliamentary procedures to give yourselves a disproportionate amount of power. Good old eastern Canada


But Scotland should definitely work on scaling down the number of counties. 7-8 could probably work for you.

Heck, if you could make them provinces you could force the UK to devolve a bunch of powers down to you and you could become essentially independent much like Quebec is in some cases

Haha. It only ever matters if someone is stupid enough to try to open the constitution, something I am currently opposed to in any way anyway. For having this small bit of disproportionate power, we get to have absolutely no effect on the election of the government at all, the everlasting hatred of anyone dumb enough to think we're affecting their say in the country, and lipservice from the government as they strip out all of our safety nets anyway.

Does Russia still count as Europe? I mean it goes further east than Asia does...
Anyway, Arctic 30 granted amnesty by Russian parliament. Still will be some interesting paperwork to get them home, but good news. Was anybody else following that, by the way?
