Do you know what directly lead into the Second Chechen war? Terroristic acts did.
If you read closely, you'll notice I specified terrorist acts against military targets only, and advised against such a course of action.

And shooting down a plane that violates our airspace is perfectly legitimate, and legal to boot. Not shooting them down is a gesture of friendliness that Russia frankly no longer deserves.

When Gary Powers in his U-2 flew to Soviet airspace in 1960 to spy on Soviet military installations, only to get blown out of the sky by a Soviet SAM missile, it didn't lead to a war.

However, U-2 is a spy plane. No one had the balls to shoot down a bomber of the opposing side without any provocation.

It also flew very deep in USSR territory. Modern bombers tend to not do that.

Ah, so that's why they had so much empty space.

And riding directly into the warzone in white trucks to loot something isn't cowardly.

you'd fell less nervous that way

Why are you so sure about the "surrender" thing?

It also flew very deep in USSR territory. Modern bombers tend to not do that.
Russian Tupolev bombers intercepted and escorted out of Dutch airspace twice today by F16 fighters.
So yeah, in European airspace. Shooting them down would be completely legit.

Technically, yes. They are violating NATO airspace, and if a UK flyover is not 'very deep into NATO territory' I don't know what is.
In practice, ever since Russia started sending bombers over Europe, about 5 years ago (before that, this had not happened since cold war times), all that happens is that they get an escort out. According to our ministry, it happens a few times a year.
It's a scary thought though. Don't want to imagine the day that they come with 'drop payload' orders instead of 'be an ass'. These are just (very) old Tupolev "Bear" bombers, so they can be spotted as incoming long before they enter our airspace. Analysts say it's a combination of Russia probing NATO response time, and just showing off. I hope our military doesn't get too comfortable thinking they always spot them in time, cause when Russia would send newer generation bombers, I'm not so sure they'd be spotted in time.
