How am I being naive?

I don't think she should have said what she said.
I don't believe what she says is necessarily racist, but there's a chance it could have been.

Given everyone else was going straight for the "She's definitely a racist" approach, I tried to say how she may not have been saying something racist. With a statement like that, it's likely she was being casually racist. But to hell am I going to let you automatically say it definitely was.

Then amend "politically correct" to "insensitive."

I didn't know there were connotations behind Ting Tong other than that which the article put forth. Which didn't mention it in a racist light.

She doesn't have to be malicious for it to be racist. Just the fact that her go-to descriptor of the woman was "a ting-tong from somewhere" instead of something like "thai woman" or "asian woman" or even just forgoing race and going with "the food vendor lady" or something like that, that's enough to make her a casual racist. Not the hateful KKK style, just the whole "Oh she's just some thing from somewhere else, who cares?" kind of thing.

I find it astounding how many lengths people will go for some apologetics.

Well it doesn't really make sense for  a politician to be racist towards one of their supporters. Especially in an interview, plus they are already the party accused of racism and probably not happy about it.

They don't think they're being racist. Yet when you're an asshole, you're gonna leak shit.

Eh...

One racist comment (That may not be a racist comment, though the odds do seem to lean that way from my crash course on Racist Remarks) obviously not intended to be said, nor really meant, is not enough to label someone as an "asshole"

The comment was an arsey thing to say. If someone says an arsey thing and thus acts like an arsehole it's fairly safe to call them an arsehole until they change their ways.

Implying if you have a minority supporter that you're suddenly no longer a racist. You can be a racist and appeal to the people you have the disposition towards. That's one of politician's main jobs. It's just typically the politician-racists usually keep their mouths shut. UKIP MEP's have a snowball's chance in hell at longevity, though, so I suppose they just want to go in a ball of fiery glory whilst their apologetics try to take hold.

Xenophobe groups are curious like that.

That's why gaffes and such are so popular. Most politicians speak... politically. So when they let something slip, it's seen as kind of like a "So how do you *really* feel?" moment, where they show what they *really* think, not just what they say to appeal to voters.
