Meanwhile,
http://thetimes-tribune.com/news/cheese-war-ripening-between-eu-u-s-1.1648584
We did have a thread about TTIP at some point I think. I hope it falls through at this point, I don't want to eat the crap that is sold as food in the US.  :P

To hear NBC tell it, (in a manner of not-so-well-disguised amusement), 'Europe's just hating because wisconsin's been winning awards'.

Vice News Report: (Meeting the Donbass Battalion- Russian Roulette in Ukraine)
I recommend it

Also, here are English Facebook page of that battalion - https://www.facebook.com/CTBDonbas . It is in a process of translation of content from the Russian version back from April 20 when the battalion was formed

Original page is here - https://www.facebook.com/teroboronaDonbass

But yeah when Palestine gets appropriate recognition, if they don't get to participate in Eurovision they're going to have a big problem with be battering down their doors with my fists of righteous anger.

Ahahaha.

Edit: Actually, after looking it up, I was wrong. The most certainly would be eligible to participate as long as they have a broadcaster that is a member of the European Broadcasting Union (Which among other thing require UN membership, that's why Kosovo ain't participating). Actually, it appears the reason no Arab country is participating (Except for Morocco in 1980) isn't bigotry on the board of the EBU, but the fact that either they have laws banning the broadcast of Israeli material (Lebanon) or their broadcasters have been pressured not to compete against Israel (Tunisia). So no sympathy for them.

Also, the Vatican is apparently eligible for participation! I know what to pray for now!

American cheese is a bit like the M4 Sherman; sure it's likely not as good as a German connoisseur's choice, but for what it is, it's cost effective, relatively homogenous in quality, and is perfectly serviceable on a decent burger given the chance. In other words, it's supposed to be an inferior, cheaper variant of Euro-cheese. A true gourmet would surly find the time to buy actual Swiss cheese produced in Switzerland, while meanwhile, the cheeses can be introduced to a wider variety of audiences due to the reduced price, as a gateway to a better understanding of coagulated dairy foodstuffs.

That being said, I'll always prefer Irish cultures to anything else; just a certain grassy charm, even if they do leave an after feel that reminds me vaguely of having a sore throat.

Tankburger? Now, seriously, we don't want to tell you how to make your cheese, we just don't want you to use our names. :p

Then proceed to observe as we add "style" in 2pt sized words next to our newly renamed products, and have shrewd businessmen sell our old packaging on Ebay for inflated prices.

Though, doesn't stating "Europe" is having a conflict versus "Greece and cohorts" sort of undermine the whole preservation of culture thing this is meant to represent?

... if American cheese is like M4 Sherman, would it require 4-5 American slices of cheese to sneak up on 1 slice of German cheese from behind in order to have a chance to kill it? :P

The whole kaboodle is about preserving the cultures the cheeses originated from, and saying that Europe is the driving force here could be undermining the culture part, since Europe is a cultureless (comparatively?) conglomerate. I think.

It kind of rubs me as treating Europe as a homogeneous entity as opposed to a bunch of seperate countries and cultures that happen to exist on a particular continent, but then again, I suppose it's mostly for convince due to the large amount of European nations taking issue. Sort of akin to taking an event occuring in Mexico, and referring it as "American".

Of course, it's mostly an American (and Australian, and Antarctic) thing to use your continent's name as a stand-in for your country.

Don't be silly; for their equivalent costs, it would only take two American cheeses under the contol of a competant chef to defeat a heavy German cheese, and they would cover more sandwiches while you're at it.

Edit: Silly mobile device and your inability to merge quotes into a single post! Double post in shame.

Well, in this case the negotiations are led by the European Union (specifically the commission), not the member states, so it makes sense to speak of Europe.

After all, we speak of the US on the other side of the cheese war and not of "Wisconsin and cohorts".

Into the fray stepped Irina Yarovaya, a United Russia lawmaker who often generates the ideological laws that buttress Mr. Putin’s positions. In a speech to Parliament, she criticized attempts to “slander a country that in fact defended its sovereignty, like, for example, the U.S.S.R., which even hypothetically could not be part of the Hitler coalition and played a decisive role in the anti-Hitler coalition to protect the world and humanity from fascism and, as you remember, suffered big losses in that war.”

The French, Brits and Germans have quite a distinctive cultures nowadays.
