Gather those available people together

"Alright, looks like there is a job that needs doing.  Any of you brave souls want to volunteer before I pick?"

You step into the street and continue on. You walk for half an hour before coming upon a massive ten story hotel. The paint is bright and without wear and you decide that it must be either new or expensively refurbished. The glass in the heavy wooden doors at the front hasn't escaped damage though its certainly in much better shape than most of the buildings around here. You don't hear or see anything going on inside. You can try for this one or move on in hopes of something better.

gman8181
They all look at each other, no one wanting to say anything first. Finally Lance stands up. Someone's got to watch your ass, chief. Might as well be me. And Jimmy will come along too. Won't you Jim? Schweitzer punctuates this statement by racking the bolt back on his rifle. You betcha kiddo. Marburg puts out his cigar with the palm of his hand and slips it into his shirt pocket.

"What do you say, Terrence, should we give it a shot?"

interpret Terrence's response. For a deadly fungus, it's surprisingly smart.

If yes, move inside quietly. Look for cover immediately.

If no, keep hunting.

It's Allora, by the way ;)

((Haha, two Jims?  Hopefully that won't get confusing.))

Jim gave a quick look of appreciation towards his volunteers.

"Thanks.  Alright you too then Waters.  Let's get this over with."

Have everyone get ready including myself and head out.

You remove Terrence from your pocket and hold him up in front of your face. What do you think buddy? This seem like a good place? The little blob only wiggles a tiny bit, adjusting his position, then goes still, his body expanding and contracting steadily as he respires. He seems to be deliberating and you wait patiently for his verdict. It'll probably be a while.

gman8181
Waters sits up with a groan of effort, then sighs with an agreeable sort of reluctance. Anything for you Sarge. Lets beat eh fellas? The sooner we get out of here the sooner we can get back to the damn fire. The others mutter an agreement and you all clamber over the earthworks that form your outer perimeter. Lexi hands you a shotgun and an ammo pouch over the wall and you take them with gratitude, slinging the pouch over your shoulder. You check the gun and find it fully loaded. To your pleasure Lexi remembered to put your map and compass inside the pouch. It would have been difficult to navigate without them.

Jim is already scanning the road ahead through the marksman's scope mounted atop his rifle. I can't see nothin' Sarge. First stop is the pump station. I can give you a refresher on the area if you're having trouble remembering where everything is. You consider your scout's words. It wouldn't hurt to go about this in a somewhat organised fashion, but you've done patrols sloppily before and nearly always come out okay. You spend a few seconds thinking.

While he deliberates, let's step inside. Place Terrence on my shoulder and step in the door.

What's the situation for cover inside? Look for traps, too - that door could be rigged. There are killers out here, after all.

You set your little friend carefully on your right shoulder and he quickly morphs, moulding to the shape of it. You stare at your shoulder, mouth agape, and suddenly his skin ripples and slowly changes colour to match the coat, disguising himself, though not perfectly. The hue is off, though just by a shade, and you doubt anyone would notice unless they felt the texture.

You shrug, then approach the door with care. You take your time checking the heavy wooden door for booby traps, conscious that someone may still be here. After a few minutes of studying the door frame and trying to peer through the frosted front window you finally decide the best way to find out if the entrance is rigged is to just go for it. You turn the doorknob and ease it open. When you don't explode you push the door open completely, stepping forward with confidence and looking around quickly. You see the new sunlight coming in through the dusty, barren lobby flash across something metal and grey.

The realisation comes too late and you manage only a brief flinch before a bullet slams into your shoulder, spinning you round and tossing you to the floor. You roll over slowly and put a hand against the wall near the wide open door, trying to stand up, but a lance of pain shoots through your chest and you slip back to the floor. You look up as your assailant, a young boy, haggard and half-naked, his skin black with infection, approaches you from behind the counter and walks slowly towards you, his pistol still trained on your torso. He stops a few feet away from you, his face set in a cold, lifeless expression. He's obviously starving and his skin hangs from his bones like that of an old man's.

You both stay like that for a few moments, just staring at one another. Your body is wracked with waves of pain and you don't dare take your eyes away to look at the wound. The boy takes another step forward and levels the pistol. Click. His eyes go wide with surprise.

Our standard recon will take us EAST down to the next intersection, where the Pump Station is located, our first reference point. Its always entirely abandoned and we have a small stash of emergency supplies stashed there should the outpost ever fall.

After that is the ruined clinic to the NORTH from the Pump Station. Lots of human squatters there, and its rarely ever empty. We're not on speaking terms with them but there's an understanding. We leave them alive, and they keep that street clean. Once in a while we like to check on them, and I'm sure they do the same for us. They probably won't shoot us on sight, but I wouldn't count on it in this fog. You can't take chances here and I'm sure they know that considering that they've survived as long as they have. Its better for everyone if we just keep our heads down.

Once we've checked on the people we double back to the Pump Station, then head SOUTH to the infested Tenements. Its a dangerous place thats always overgrown no matter how many times we burn the place. We frequently discover patches of Lobe Caps and Irish Crackers down there, plus the usual suspects. You know how it is. We usually just check the alleys and torch anything thats getting too out of hand to prevent the dangerous ones from spreading to the surrounding buildings or the street, but sometimes we try for the inside. We've never made it past the first floor before having to fall back, but funnily enough no matter how many times we hit the place we always find something useful.

Once thats done we'll head back to the Pump Station and take a breather, then we'll see what we're up for from there. Everything clear enough for you boss man?

You swing the pick hard, cracking into a large rock and splitting it in two. Sweat runs down your face and you lean on the handle of the pick, drawing the sleeve of your shirt across your brow, smearing the grime across your forehead. You're bringing the pick to bear once when you hear a distant shout echo from the tunnel at your back. You turn slowly, a puzzled look on your face, still breathing hard from the day's work. You squint hard, peering down the unlit shaft, straining your eyes to pierce through the gloom. Its eerily silent, moreso than usual, and you make a face, annoyed that no one had sung out for help if it had been an injury, or yelled an apology if they had simply been clumsy. Now you have to go check it out. You take your spare gas lantern from its hook on the wall and light it.
