Aseaheru
You wake up in an alley. Its relatively bare, with piles of garbage and several trashcans lining the walls. It stretches off in either direction. One end is close enough that you can see the street, which is carpeted in surprisingly normal looking brown mushrooms sprouting up through the pavement, and the other is laid in a thick grey fog from which you occasionally hear low pitched moans. You shiver in the cool, quiet breeze, your bare hands numb against the cold metal of your crowbar, its weight reassuring you that the horrors of the city will at the very least not have too terribly easy of a time of murdering you.

Pufferfish
You set down your switchblade, seizing a helpless can opener in one hand and a large tin of peaches with bright orange labelling in the other. You wind the opener carefully, mouth watering. The can pops open and you remove the lid, revealing a fleshy red blob that pulsates excitedly in the open air. You recoil in disgust, dropping the can and its contents onto the floor. The blob hits the floor, bouncing once before coming to a rest near the rack of now less than appetising canned food. It pulsates slowly and you stare at the thing, unable to tear your gaze from it. You notice where your switchblade had fallen in the confusion, on the ground next to the blob. If you want it back you'll have to get very close to it.

Craaaap. I knew it was too good to be true :P

Utilize lead pipe. nudge my blade to near my feet then pick it up while keeping an eye on the blob.

Pufferfish
You stretch the pipe out in one hand, using the other to brace yourself against the shelf and holding your feet as far as you can keep them from the blob. You land the tip of the pipe on the knife and slide it over to you, producing a loud scraping sound against the pavement. The blob freezes at the sound and then leaps, squishing against the pipe and enveloping the end of it. You stagger backwards in surprise, still holding the pipe, and it slides down the length of it and onto your hand. You let the pipe fall and the blob runs over your skin like water, covering your entire hand all the way up to the wrist. You claw at it in horror, trying to pull it off, but it only tightens its grip. You finally stop struggling as you realise you can't remove it and just stare at the living goo covering your arm. After a few minutes it simply slides off and falls back to the ground. You touch it gingerly with one finger and it quivers, rolling toward you slightly. It almost seems kind of.. Cute…. Pet acquired: Amorphous Blob!

DUDE WHAT FUCKING HELL YES A PET FUNGUS.

Ahem. Must have been a lucky roll for me.

Pick up my knife. Peek into another food can, don't open it all the way. If it's still nasty, just take a can opener with me and leave with pet blob. I'll call it Terrence.

You bend over, pocketing the knife and scooping up the blob. You hold him in both hands and hold him up in front of your face. So whats your name little guy? How about.. Terrence? It quivers excitedly at its shiny new designation, and you slip him into an inner pocket where he'll be nice and warm. You converse with him quietly while working another can of open. I knew a guy named Terrence once. He was pretty okay, which is why I named you after him! You're pretty okay you know? Terrence wiggles at the sound of his new friend's voice and you giggle quietly at his response. The can pops open, revealing fat juicy slices of peach. Yum! You check a few other cans and find they're also untainted. Terrence squirms at the sound of the cans opening, trying to escape the confines of your pocket. Maybe he's hungry?

gman8181
Your patchwork Army unit formed of the remnants of the elements of the decimated battalion that was originally assigned to cordon and secure the city fights its way through the streets, exterminating the desperate and crazed remnants of its populace and hordes of horrifyingly disfigured creatures. The 31 man team is camped out at a three-way intersection, your only outpost inside the city. The rest of the unit is organised into kill squads roaming the outskirts, burning all that grows and killing anything that tries to leave.

Your ten man squad is broken into rotating groups that take turns watching one of the streets and resting in the shelters you've constructed in a shelled out building. You, your fellow Sergeants Millon and Felix, and Captain Lenard sit in a small circle in the centre of camp. You consult your recon reports and discover that they're all a few days old. The Captain wants one of the officers to take a few men and check the eastern approach, the one with the most activity, to check the landmarks and reference points and report back. There is an opportunity for you to volunteer for the duty. If you don't, there will almost certainly be some other equally important task for you to do.

Feed Terrence some fat, juicy peaches.

Have some delicious food myself.

Look around the store more, see if it's worth staying here.

((Glad you're back Gun!  Oh and sweet, I think I got the best setup so far!))

Jim gave a tired sigh as the Captain spoke.  Sounded dangerous but someone had to go, so it might as well be him.  This may damn well be the apocalypse but fuck it, Jim didn't have much besides his job before so what difference did it all make?

"Alright Captain, you need a volunteer then you can sign me up as usual.  Always love an opportunity to get out and stretch my legs ::)."

Volunteer for the mission and see if there is any available extra equipment to take with me like a gun.

Thanks! Didn't mean to be gone for a fucking WEEK.

I'm having a great time doing this one. The gradual exposition via all these individual characters is good fun!

Also, Xantolos, the clarity that hindsight provides made me realise your ending was super unfair. I promise I'll make it up to you m'kay? :)

You take a few pieces of fruit and slip them into your pocket. Terrence emits a satisfied coo as he envelops them, "chewing" methodically. You eat the contents of the cans you opened, slurping the dregs and tossing them into a corner. You stuff as many cans of fruit as can fit into the briefcase and snap it shut.

Looking around the store, you try to figure how good a place to stay this would be. The back is filled with food, but far from secure and easily visible from the street through the shattered front of the store. You look around the main room and find nothing else of value has been left behind.

gman8181
The captain chuckles knowingly. All right Jimmy. Take three men and one of the trench guns. We'll keep the place clean for you. You rise from the small crate you were sitting on and walk over to your assigned street. The men look up at you expectantly. They know they're due for a patrol and they wait patiently for you to let them know who's up this time. Lexi, Ganados and Reese tagged along last time, so they're out. Benny is on wall-duty and traditionally the man who last worked watch is exempt. So that leaves Schweitzer, Luca, Hampton, Waters, Lance and Pitola. You consider for a moment, before finally coming to a decision...

Pufferfish - Uhhh… Whats your name again? :D

"All right Terrence, let's find us a place to crash."

Scout nearby for a good building. Hopefully slightly hidden or multistory.

Or an entrance into the sewer system. Nice and roomy down there.
