Uh... we didn't send a war party. We sent 4 guys with an enchanted (normal looking?) axe. If they tried anything suspicious it's not going to be good for their health.

So. Concerning the whole "let's disease the tree" thing.

1. What traditions do the treeholders have (will be answered later), depending on their practices it could be very helpful for us.

2. Have the goblin show every sign of traveling by himself (the other two leave the gobbo with the axe) and let him do a suicide charge at the tree. Bonus points if our other two guys are the one that kills him.

3. Considering the size of the tree we could send one (untrained) goblin in and have it look like an accident, though him and the axe are probably forfeit at that point.

Odds are if they're the only ones tending to the shrine (and surroundings) They're going to be physically fit, in the Shaolin Monks sense. We sent 1 guy with military training and three thugs.
Even better, if they're not the only ones tending to the shrine, then there's a town nearby with the logistics to support this shrine against whatever they might fight against.

If we try something bigger than a assassination mission (against a tree) we're going to succeed (maybe), lose 4 goblins, the axe, and probably an army at our camp the next day.

Neh, just wait till night and then d the deed. The life monks shouldn't notice the gobbos, or connect them with the death of their tree.

Why not:
1. We lack the means to do so.
2. We lack the motives to do so (we are not their enemies).
3. The fields are almost totally harvested. Burning them will create ashed that could be used as fertilizers.

FTFY. I thought of it while reading your post, and it struck me. I may be wrong, but recently harvested fields aren't the most burnable things, IMO.

Arsonist? Maybe they are distressed by the lack of magma-coated elves?

I've put some expositiony stuff into the information post.

I'm not really sensing that any plan has more support then any other so if you guys could figure that out that'd be good. I don't really want to do an update unless I know I can pick a plan that a strong majority of you supports.

Hide the axegoblin, enter the temple peacefully, work out a plan after gathering info. (which will probably be along the lines of "cut&run at night")

We're trying to avoid entering a drawn out war.

Plans that support randomly burning fields with nothing to burn have very little support. Normally, this would go without saying, but not here.

I like this plan, especially the "info" and "not entering a war" parts.

Well, I wasn't sure about any of the plans, but I like plan a: the one while most gobbos infiltrate the temple and one kills the tree at night. I think that the risk is worth the benefits of it.

I support any plan that has these three goals, in order of priority:

Don't start a war.

Gather information, economic and military.

Complete the tree-kill task.
