Consider this: Gregor and Derick have a duel with same quality weapons (Iron, for example) and in neutral conditions (no terrain, supports and so on). On whom you would bet?

Derick the Swordmaster of Doom
Gregor the Tanky Stab-Sentinel

Alexander missile

It's not very effective

Is he gonna yell the secret through solid rock? :p

Besides, I'm hoping Riven can think of something. Somehow she's the only dedicated magic-user in the room.

I knew there was a flaw in my plan somewhere. And I think Riven is busy having a Maniacal BSOD.

Sirus forgot about the detail, Haspen doesn't care if she is a magic user or not. He will just go HEUHEUEEHUEHEU and use some way to solve the problem that nobody thought about.

It's almost certain smashing the orb is the answer. There's no problem double-checking before that, though.

I don't know why it would. That'd be Tomb of Horrors level screwery. Haspen isn't dicky, he's just cruel. He would rather us strive and fail than drop a meteor on us and laugh.

This is the most effective description I've heard for Haspen.

I'm not saying Haspen would tell us its safe only to kill us anyway. I'm saying that it wouldn't surprise me if Riven examined it and discovered it was filled with deadly poison or something. In that case, if we had simply smashed it instead of examining it, it'd be our fault.

Personal note: It seems... Too obvious to me honestly, but I'm admittedly a rather paranoid fellow who pokes at shadows a bit too much.

The previous orb maintained the illusion supposedly after being activated, when it shattered the maintained magics sputtered out. One could possibly extrapolate this to the current orb in that it is maintaining an effect by its structural integrity, but with a base pool of only the other orb, its a flimsy hypothesis. Riven will probably know, or be able to harness a good enough guess as much.

My OOC comments on the situation.

FINALLY!

That was a pretty awesome ending to the chapter. Surprising for an FE game.

I'm trying to make the game as little tedious and repetitive as possible :P

I told you the way to solve it would be something really simple. : P  Valor knew how to solve this all the time because he just doesn't care if it is a magic orb.
