But then people can't see where they can move their pieces.

Knowing Belgium, everyone will vote for themselves out of mistrust for anyone else, and some kind of weird direct democracy coalition will need to be formed from 11 million or so individuals.

Google Docs (as well as Excel) uses light grey borders to represent their absence, which obviously show up on screenshots.

I'm not sure why they look like that,
Because you're cutting tiles out and pasting them where they need to go, taking the borders with them.
Oh, that problem.
What's your proposed solution?
Don't use any borders.
I am starting to suspect I don't actually know what you're complaining about.

Which borders are the problem?

G3 > G5

In Lords of Centria I simply just retype the information. As you're only moving one thing per movement that should really help you out with not having the borders disappear.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Make all red borders (which you keep messing up) look like blue borders by deleting them.

Am I readng the rules correctly that even if I mate the king and, obviously, capture it the next turn, the game will not be over if there are guards remaining around him? Because it would be a really stupid rule, were it true.

Thus is the problem with adding new pieces to any game. They may have an impact far beyond what you intend.

I know. Paradropping knights into king-forks is so much fun...

Aside from calling that a checkmate, correct.
Guards strike me as a piece that will be...rather annoying. (Try capturing an adjacent pawn.)

Wait, can the Dragon jump diagonally?
Yes. Why couldn't it?
