A new RPG: Big quake
« on: February 08, 2013, 02:50:42 am »

Hi, could I introduce my new game?
This is BigQuake, a turn based RPG, currently in beta version, but fully playable.
The game is survival-like, you are one of the few still alive after a big earthquake, and you mission is to try to stay alive.
It is playing on two level: first is a large scale map (1 hex=100m), then you can zoom into (key "Z") new map ( 1 square=5 m).
In the zoomed map you can explore houses (collapsed), harvest fields (if any), cultivate your own fields, attack/attacked by from wild animals or bandit.
At present there is not the load/save function...

In next release you can join with other survivor to create stronger group (this is NOT an online game, you cannot join with other human player!).

This is the link to download (I'll create a main page more detailed):

I hate to be the bringer of bad news, but nobody on the forum likes first time posts about their game. It's spammy.

Second, nobody likes direct links to screenshots that may or may not be virus laden.

Third, absolutely no information was given on the game itself and it's off putting.

Once again, sorry.

Basically what Alex said. It's generally considered spammy unless you give a good description, a few screenshots and a few links to a forum/main page/wiki. And use [spoiler=name][img widht=x height=y] for spoilered images.

Alright, this looks pretty nice. You can edit your first post too, by the way. Just click the "modify" button in the top right of your post.

This actually looks cool, how unusual. The name made me think this was going to be some weird variation of Quake, though, something like DoomRL.

I don't understand why people frown upon people advertising their game on Bay12 as the first thing. We go to the Other Games forum to discover and discuss games, I don't see why you'd care who posts them. OP probably just wants to share his game to gain some support while still contributing to the forum.

I think it's great that this is the go-to place for people to post about their niche games.  Where else can you go to find out about games in these genres?

I also don't understand why we're rude to them.

It should be, "Thanks for posting." If it's not something anyone is interested in, it will just slowly disappear. Like my thread asking for any other Monster Rancher-like games.

Actually, I've always thought Toady was getting soft by letting people advertise in here. I don't let people barge in on my social gatherings just because they're selling something we happen to be discussing. IRL, I've told publishers of board games that they can't set up advertising kiosks at events I run at my university. It's called soliciting. There is a sign.

I think it's different when a developer finds that somebody has already made a thread about their game and decides to step in and chat, though. That's cool, because they're taking the time to interface with their users.

I don't believe that anybody in this thread was actually being rude, either. It was a generic post with a direct link to an .exe download in it. Telling the OP that something was amiss was much nicer than just ignoring it.

I really don't have a problem with it, as long as an aquadate description is provided. The dev did that, so I'm happy.

Well, it's not like they're just shamelessly popping their link here then leaving. The devs who advertise here always seem to stick around to get feedback and discuss stuff, some have even become relatively active members. OP could have easily said he had "discovered" the game rather than created it and there would have been nothing weird about it, the fact that he admits that he's the creator shows that he actually cares about our opinions and feedback, and I don't really see what's wrong in that.

I don't think anyone was rude, but the whole "first post advertisement is frowned upon" thing just doesn't seem logical to me.

anyone wanna talk about the game

I've tried the game, and i don't know how to move. I'm playing on Linux-Lubuntu with Wine, and the mouse does nothing, nor the keyboard. I can use the I-nventory, F-ish, etc, but can't move. Or i didn't understand something ?

The game seems very empty, but it feels like Neo Scavenger, with hexs and two scales. And maybe Unreal World too.

You are right, my instructions was still very poor.
Anyway, to move you can use keys 1-9, and the arrows to move the maps, "C" for center on player.
"Esc" to quit (I know, for now it quit suddenly)
I recommend the use of binoculars ("A"+"B"), this increase your field of view (useful in the night, too).

Word.  Something I've noticed is that a lot of shit we take for granted on the internet would never be tolerated outside it.  Someone you've never met barging into your discussion to solicit something, installers trying to sneak extra programs in, all that stuff doesn't fly in real life.

it took me a few minutes to figure that "La risorsa richiesta è accessibile" means "please download your file here. But first look at our pretty logo" and not "Error, Error go away!"
