I'm on the "it exists" side, of course.

Sometimes people put fake cities on maps so they'll know if people copy them. I theorize that Maryland was a fake state added to a map and everyone has just copied from that one instead of checking for themselves.

The US government, maps of the United States, and 5.8 million people are all proof of Maryland's existence.
Washington D.C. is not a state though, so don't get that in your head.
