It isn't that genius to predict they'd use tear gas against him, nor is it particularly genius to realize that a suit which covers your eyes, mouth, nose, and most of your skin would be a good defense against it.

Most don't cover the face, most wouldn't be able to predict and most times under stress people wouldn't be able to put on a suit let alone know where to find one. I am starting to wonder if this actually happened or if the news is just glorifying another killer.

This wasn't just some guy. He was a member of both the Navy Reserve and the LAPD, and had all the training associated with those roles. He even had an Expert Pistol Shot Medal from the Navy. Dorner was a man who had extensive training on how to act rationally and quickly under extreme pressure, and he clearly had some sort of a plan for this whole thing.

I think that it's more that he knew what the LAPD's tactics would be (having once been a member) and that he prepared accordingly. Which could have hypothetically involved preparing to fake his death and provide fake dental records in a way that the police coroner wouldn't notice, but probably didn't.

That's a bit to only-seen-in-movies for me.

Hey, organized crime hasn't exactly disappeared, despite today's methods. They likely see the movies as being inexpert and unprofessional.

The only part I'm struggling to accept as possible is the dental records part.
How exactly would you fake your own dental records and then escape a burning building?

The only way I can think of is to find someone with identical or at least near-identical dentistry to you. This is pretty unlikely though not impossible, dentistry isn't quite as unique an identifier as fingerprints, there have been cases where bodies and such have been misidentified.

Of course, the only way I can see him ever actually finding someone with teeth that are match for his is by sheer coincidence, like if he went for a checkup at the dentist's and the dentist said something like, "Man, the guy that was just in here five minutes ago has teeth that are exactly like yours... Like if you substituted his body for yours in a cabin fire I totally wouldn't be able to tell the difference."

You'd presumably have to change the records, which would be... difficult, to say the least. Electronic records are difficult to falsify stealthily if somebody's looking, which I assume they would with an ex-member of the force being involved (and, even if they didn't, it's unlikely he could've pulled it off or talked a buddy into doing it). I don't really think there's much chance it isn't him.

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Two ways come to mind. The easiest would be if Dorner had an old friend (or someone he had serious blackmail on) in the coroner's office who would be willing to lie about the dental records. Cops bring in the body, the guy pretends to work, comes back and says "Yep, it's Dorner." and everyone accepts that, since the thought that the LAPD and associates had a shootout with an innocent man, convinced him to shoot himself and they set him on fire is too horrible for most people to even consider. Slightly more painful than that would be to not fake the dental records at all. Dorner and his hostage/accomplice/whoever it is that was actually found both get their teeth pulled out. Dorner tosses the other guy's teeth and leaves his own in the cabin to be found by the cops. The coroner finds the remains of a body and a set of teeth matching Dorner's and concludes that they must have been Dorner's teeth. If he's feeling really clever, he could have done both. Had some of his teeth pulled out and handed them off to his coroner accomplice, who does the swap once the body is in the morgue.

Really, the most implausible part of that theory is not "How could Dorner fool the dental records check?", which is frightfully easy to do, but rather, "Who was in the cabin shooting at the cops if it wasn't Dorner?"

I think you're overestimating the ability of a human being to rip out their own teeth and plant it for forensic analysts. The chances of that working are so slim that it's better to just shoot yourself.

If it was anything, it would be the buddy/blackmailed (via dead man switch release information?) coroner. And frankly the idea of some random person out in a cabin opening up on LAPD officers when they saw them approaching is the most plausible part of that.
