But unless that corruption extends to pathological lying they probably aren't doing it in this case.
It's not entirely out of the question. Remember, American police are trained to perjure and lie at every corner in order to maximize conviction rates. An entire organization trained to do this, and corrupt even by the standards of their peers, who do the same, could reasonably lie when it is a bad idea to do so.

I admit it is unlikely and that the corpse is probably his. I'm just not ruling the alternative out.

If they think they can get him before he actually starts killing people again, or have some reason to believe he won't, I could see it. It wouldn't be smart, but I could see somebody wanting to make sure they don't come out of the housefire fiasco looking incompetent, especially if it should happen that there was anybody else in the house. So the plausibility, I suppose, probably comes down to how likely you think it is that the LAPD thinks it can carry out that whatever operation they'd need to in order to find him without anybody noticing. Probably all bullshit, but eh, I'm in conspiracy mode lately.

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Yeah, if he escaped away from LA into the woods, and a body was in the house, I could see them covering up the fact that an innocent victim died in the fire if they thought they could take him out quietly.

I'm inclined to believe that Dorner is dead and it wasn't a string of coincidences that led to a suspect resembling him to hole up inside a cabin and engage in a firefight with police until he went down in flames. Now, whether they set the fire or it was an accident I'm less certain of...

And the family of this innocent victim would have their memories wiped and thus not report the disappearance, while the magic teleporting troops (the kind that they declined to use in Benghazi) are deployed to take out Dorner instantly to end the whole affair.

Most of those people don't go missing while in the same area as a rampage killer.

Granted, yeah. If the body wasn't Dorner, Dorner still certainly was in the building at some point, and almost certainly involved in the shooting. I can't stretch conspiracy mode further than that without allowing the intervention of Moon Nazis to have played a role. The corpse would then be anything from an accomplice to a hostage that didn't get reported on for inexplicable reasons (it'd have improved ratings even more so there'd have to be a HELL of an incentive against it, or else Dorner was a stupid, stupid man and forgot to tell anyone). Again, provided insane conspiracy ramblings have any accuracy here.

And the family of this innocent victim would have their memories wiped and thus not report the disappearance, while the magic teleporting troops (the kind that they declined to use in Benghazi) are deployed to take out Dorner instantly to end the whole affair.
Mmmmmmmno. See, people exist who don't have a family they keep in touch with, and even I'm not asserting any degree of success. In fact I'm speculating on the possible stupidity of somebody who'd try to cover it up. I mean, yeah, I also admit that I have no basis in fact for any of this, but dammit, you're really good at making me try and defend an irrational guess instead of just saying it once without particularly caring one way or the other.

CHRIS DORNER INTENTIONALLY TARGETED PEOPLE WITH NO FAMILY TO KEEP IN TOUCH WITH BECAUSE HE WAS IN LEAGUE WITH THE LAPD

What? Now you're just being crazy. What's with the conspiracy nonsense?

But seriously, it's like you're not even trying to be at all civil. Step 1: Realize that nobody's claiming a coverup like this has actually happened.

Unless they got a reason to stay missing.

I don't believe the LAPD would call it a wraps if they think he is still out there.  The guy killed cops(non-LAPD) AND he killed close people of LAPD cops.  They may be corrupt, but they've essentially been attacked.  Revenge and laying the law down is what would be their motivator to make sure they really got the guy.
Else, you'd probably see some shifting of loyalty away from the people making the decision.  (Not looking out for us kind of deal.)  That is if the hush hush behind it gets leaked by someone discontent with the decision and/or if Dorner shows up again.

You're being needlessly defensive of a stupid point, so I decided to go with a joke rather than continuing to fight against this endless wave of "just asking questions".

Eh. It's less stupid than you're making it out to be. That doesn't make it not stupid, but when you're putting it in the same category as teleporting supersoldiers and selective amnesia pills, it becomes one of those "Hey, come on, don't be a douche" things. Do note that I've been consistently saying, "This is crazy conspiracy-talk" the whole time since after the first post, since it's become clear that the whole "This is idle speculation with no grounding in evidence, and I'm completely aware of that" thing was apparently not clear from the start. It's certainly not, "This is totally what happened, you closed-minded sheep" under the guise of "I'm just asking questions", which is the implication I'm getting defensive about.

Dental records confirm corpse is Dorner
Can we get a source on that?
Here's the most direct source I could find, in a brief google.  Naturally the article includes some choice quotes such as
Quote
McMahon said. "The rounds kept coming, but our deputies didn't give up."

The suspect then fled into a nearby vacant cabin, which caught fire after police shot tear gas canisters into it, McMahon said.

Although the canisters included pyrotechnic tear gas, which generates heat, "We did not intentionally burn down that cabin to get Mr. Dorner out," McMahon said.
Which seem conflicted by audio records (listen to the recording, it's no "pull it").

I'm pretty confident that they (San Bernardino sheriff McMahon made the press release) wouldn't go straight ahead and lie about the actual dental records though.
Quote
Authorities said Wednesday they are reasonably sure that the body found inside the burned cabin near Big Bear Lake, California, is that of Christopher Dorner...

...

Although the description and behavior of the man who was killed are consistent with Dorner, officials "cannot absolutely, positively confirm it was him," McMahon said.
Quotes like that do creep me out a little, though.
