Sorry to sound irritable, but since he's taken to murdering people, I think he's kind of lost any claim to be being a fucking "upstanding", or "just" guy.

Does anyone think the only reason this is getting so much coverage is that he killed police?

Meh... a person's character is not black & white.  People do bad things with good intentions and vice versa, or simply do both good and bad things.

Haven't read the manifesto myself, but based on what other people are saying about it, I would go with former upstanding guy or upstanding guy who has currently lost the capacity to act rationally.

The whole thing looks like quite the tragic mess, but it's honestly amazing to me there aren't more vigilantes running amok with the alarming frequency with which people are horribly wronged by those society tells us we should trust and obey and then shit on when they try to seek change or reparations through proper channels.  (yes that was an absolutely horrible sentence but I give up trying to fix it :P)

People who dramatically go on a rampage always get quite a lot of news coverage.  Heck, it's actually justifiable since they're a danger to the public and it'd be useful to let them know.

What's worse is this will all be used as an excuse to disarm EVERYONE, police included. Hell, even a California senator has said that the only response is to remove guns from law enforcement and civilians.

Not to mention the fact that there are about as many guns as people in America, and there is no way in hell those will ALL be given up or forcibly seized, OR the fact that criminals will STILL have them regardless.

I can see their point about NOT confronting him, and no sane person would. But Jesus, shooting civilians because they LOOKED like the suspect? WTF LAPD. Nothing will come from that anyways.

And that is exactly why disarmament won't happen.

Can we not turn this into yet another gun control debate?

Unless you're main issue is that they'll be politicizing a tragedy, this is a reasonable response.

I have read his manifesto. And no. This dude is not that great. He's racist. He's sexiest (Possibly? It's a little muddled on this point). He's homophobic as well.

I'm not saying he has no legitimate complaint. But this is not justice. This is not even some twisted crazy person justice. This is a crazy guy being fired from his 'dream job' and so he started killing bystanders.

He's not only targeting corrupt cops, he is going after their families. He is going after all cops whether he knew them or not, even off duty cops. Even civilians who render medical aid he said he would go after.

This is completely inexcusable. Dude is fucked, and probably, fucked before this. Hell, this whole thing is only strengthening the arguments from the police that seemed to lead to this in my head. Not that I nearly believe them, but this guy is not exactly a great witness vs corruption.

Well that's pretty fucked up.  Will read his manifesto tonight to get a better idea for myself.

Has the NRA called for arming every citizen in Los Angeles yet?

That'll come after the guy is dead. Or caught, if you really believe that will happen. They'll probably time their convention to occur at the same time as a candlelight vigil for the victims or something similar, and then insist that this could have been prevented if only every person living in LA had been armed with automatic weapons.

I have read the manifesto.

Seems like an idealist who was pushed too far and that snapped. Brutally.

The problem is that he did killed innocents in his revenge, and is currently jumping over the slippery slope a lot.

I may be slightly sympathetic to his plight, the problem is that he is not restricting his rampage to guilty people.  You know what they say about those who fight monsters.

Even if he were restricting his murder to "guilty" people, kicking a suspect should not be an offense punishable by death. Neither should racism or firing a man for reporting police brutality. All those things are wrong, but just because they're wrong doesn't justify taking someone's life over it.
