Hang on, is bay12 tearing this guys project apart to find out what is fake/stolen and what isn't?

Isn't that the usual procedure?

Usual procedure is let other people do that.
Link us to someone doing it better and we'll watch. In the meantime, that looks a heck of a lot like Diablo 2.

Indeed it is. http://diablo2.diablowiki.net/File:Median_XL_screenshot_1.jpg
Ripped wholesale, it seems.
Well, I guess it is time to call in Blizzard. At the very least they can put a stop to this by calling the guy an ass for stealing art assets entirely.

Isn't Median XL a mod? We should point it ot to the mod guy first and then blizz.

They didn't change the UI in the mod. http://students.expression.edu/interfacedesign/files/2012/05/diablo2cowlevel.jpg

Oh god, I just got onto their website with delta@delta.com and the first thing that raised alarm bells was the referral scheme where you get a "percentage" of your donors' donation. I checked the rewards tier to see if there was any way for "donors" to receive some actual real reward, and not the promise of a game existing. Sadly, there was none, so it doesn't seem like a Ponzi scheme, just general incompetence.

They expect work on the actual TUP to started in 6 months, as the first 5 months are dedicated towards making the 'base' of TUP, called "Space Game". They expect to release the first version of "Space Game" within 3 months, so by that time, we should receive some (more) confirmation of their intentions.

That data needs to be stored somewhere. With the scope this project has in mind, you'll need a flying fuckload of harddrive space somewhere to store all the data.

And that's not taking into account backups, in case something is corrupted, deleted etc.

What data needs to be stored? The terrain does not need to be stored, which would be the biggest space issue.

Ultimately I am not sure what data actually needs to be stored, given how poorly defined the project is.

The "Space Game" is to test the code base (apparently proper techniques such as Unit Testing is a mystery to this guy) and is one of the reasons I have little faith in this project.

Isn't unit testing a mystery to Toady too? I'm just saying.

Dunno, but his method of testing code doesnt seem to involve spending half a year coding a dinky space game, whilst at the same time promising the universe.

You don't need to be a professional to code a complex game (as Toady shows) but you need to at least have some idea of what you are doing (something the website does not show at all) and some solid, well defined goals (the website promises building, hunting, communities etc without explaining what this actually means in the game).

Plus Toady's website doesn't require an email to access :P

Now maby, just maby this guy will pull through and create this thing. But it seems pretty unlikely.

Probably we don't need to be so rude against this poor guy. It's good to have dreams, it's good to try new things... he's just being overoptimistic and has made quite a lot of errors, from his website to ripping other companies art for his game.

Okay, forgot about those thousand dollars he earned... but even then, I think people who paid him haven't really thought about what they were doing. It's difficult for me to believe people could pay for what we've seen so far... maybe it's a lie? "Hey, look, 100 people have already paid me! Join them and make me rich!". I don't know.

I'm in a big need for money and have some programming experience... I should jump to the train xD (just kidding, if I ever try game programming I won't ask for donations until at least a playable version is made... this is getting ridiculous).

Okay, so i watched the trailer, and I have to say that it tells a lot of pure bollocks.

1st off, "the most ambitious and unique computer game project ever undertaken." I have a few issues with that statement. Claiming that something is "The Most Unique computer game project" is an incredible fallacy, as there are a lot of unique games about, and a lot of unique and ambitious projects are being worked on. Planetary Anihilation, for example, the first RTS that will allow you to weaponize asteroids and have massive scale galactic conflicts. Okay, maybe the "ambitious" part is true, but certainly not "The Most Ambitious". Ultima Ratio Regum, the roguelike that aims to bring together Total War, RPG and just a bit of Crusader Kings. That is incredibly ambitious.

Seriously, the title of the most ambitious and unique game project ever undertaken is Dwarf Fortress for me since I played it for the first time.

I do not like people who first talk and boast and then do.

Also, a game like this has already been done. It is called Cantr II and it has only text based web interface, but otherwise all features described by this guy. And much more.
