How are you gonna be compressing or simplifying the land when people can be anywhere on it at any time? This isn't a single-player game where you can neatly pack up locations that aren't near you, nor is it a space sim that is 99% featureless emptiness. If the idea is that you can literally go anywhere on the Earth, you're gonna need massive amounts of data that can be easily changed to accommodate user-made modifications such as buildings.

You can just pack up location that are not near any currently logged in player.

Building dont necessarily need to change the terrain data either.

I cant think of a reason why the terrain is so hard to do (it almost seems like on of the easiest parts of the game to do).

I checked, they dont actually check to see if it's a valid email. Im currently signed up as Q@W.com.

They're (allegedly) developing it in HTML5, so yes, it's going to be browser based. If you want to see the whole pitch, you can watch the video linked earlier in the thread. Also, as long as you enter something formated like an email address (e.g. q@q.com), you can see the inner page.

I should point out that, hilariously, it doesn't remember if you've logged in, so you have to reenter your email each time you close your browser.
EDIT: Also that making the sockpuppets does count for refferals. Thats.. this is looking great....

They promise the universe but their tech demo looks like Diablo. I know they are supposedly placeholder graphics, but that is not even remotely how I envisioned a "universe simulator".

The graphical demo (or whatever it was, with the spaceships) looks like a "My First Game" project.

I have little faith that this game will get anywhere, or that they even really know what they are doing. Has the developer(s?) given any indication that they even have any experience in game development beyond some tinkering as a kid (along with the "predictions")?

HEY GUYS! I CAN COPY AND PASTE CODE FROM HTML 5 TUTORIALS! PLEEZE GIVE ME MONEES SO I CAN CONTINUE BEING A LAZY BUM WHO COPIES CODE AND ART ASSETS.

Like, really, that's what all the visuals in that video are about. It starts with "Hey guys, look at this demo I didn't make! Isn't it cool, despite looking terrible, oh, and it doesn't really work yet but it will in a few years, at which point I will do something like it!" Followed by "Now look at this HTML tech demo I made by following the first chapter of an HTML 5 tutorial website! As you can see, client-server communication is easy in HTML 5! Which is why I'm using it! Also, I can't be bothered to make a simple test image of my own, so here's some graphics I nicked from an old game! As you can see, I is gud game maker; can haz muney?"

It's not a case of raising red flags. It's more a case of coming across a solar system flooded with messages in every conceivable language on every spectrum warning of quarantine of grey-goo replicators and guarded by a fleet of heavily armed advanced alien spacecraft consisting of so many ships it appears to be a Dyson sphere.

I don't think this kind of game can be made as he wants. It's a very interesting concept, though. Kinda reminds me of Shores of Hazeron, and if you've played it you know what kind of problems it has... even with "very limited" possibilities.

I don't want to be cruel, but this is not going to happen. At least as it is planned right now.

Thanks! I was racking my brain for the last 2 days trying to remember what game I was thinking of. Hazeron. Ah good times. Never was able to get the bloody thing working. Was able to get it working long enough to make a horrible monstrosity with legs for a face though. That may have been a glitch too.
