We already had this discussion in "When Kickstarter goes wrong?" in GD. Our conclusion was basically that this guy has a severe case of the Your World-syndrome.

Spore had some amazing technology in it (the creature creation, model generation and texturing, bones, animation, all procedurally created in real-time).

The Universe Project is probably just the most ambitious vaporware ever.

The Universe Project is probably just the most ambitious vaporware ever.

I wanted another Spore so they could do it right/better but without Will... there is just no soul.

As for this there is no indication of quality, gameplay, or just how fun it will be. Scope has NO indication of how fun the game will be.

I kinda like Spore. What i don't like about it is how sudden changes are, or that most of the game is just a tutorial. But it is an interesting concept, and i'd like to see more games like it.

As i remember, though there's questionable reliability as of this moment due to my memory, the information the guy gives on his details on the site is clearly ridiculous and often a non-sequiter.

I was hoping that ~$2k donations figure was fake, but it was only ~$1k yesterday, so obviously they're receiving donations.

It's gonna really suck for those people when they realize they threw their money into a hole.

I am surprised anyone is complaining that this game is "too ambitious" when it isn't ambituous at all.

Remember it is a planet with NO NPCs... Just let that sink in for a second.

I don't think that's what people refer to when they say "too ambitious", Neo.

Let's just look at the size of the world they want to create. They want a single world with over 196,939,900 square miles of explorable area (though a lot of that will probably be ocean). It seems they want all of this to be done "the slow way", meaning on foot without any sort of fast travel or instances to give the illusion of more space than there really is.

For reference, one of the largest game worlds to date is Daggerfall, with a comparatively measly 62,394 square miles. And that's a single-player game (we are, of course, ignoring space sims as those can toss any high number at you, but you cross them so quickly that actual size is much much smaller). The largest MMO is Lord of the Rings Online, with 30,000 square miles. That's smaller than most of the 50 individual United States.

Getting the picture yet?
I agree; way too ambitious, though if it ever succeeds I will of course be signing up.

It doesn't matter how big it is when it just becomes static.

Also I'd challenge that Spore has the biggest world if you add up all the worlds together. Yet it did it by simplifying the data to accomidate it. Yet Spore didn't really populate its world meaningfully.

When the world is 196,929,900 square miles but they are mostly empty and worthless... It is easy.

Daggerfall actually DID stuff with its land.

Daggerfall also is a rather old game by any recent standard, and you won't get a ton of people who can honestly say it looks awesome for having its massive...tracts of land. :P

How are you gonna be compressing or simplifying the land when people can be anywhere on it at any time? This isn't a single-player game where you can neatly pack up locations that aren't near you, nor is it a space sim that is 99% featureless emptiness. If the idea is that you can literally go anywhere on the Earth, you're gonna need massive amounts of data that can be easily changed to accommodate user-made modifications such as buildings. There can be no invisible walls, there can be no "nodes" that have no direct access between them. Hell, even fast-travel could be considered "cheating" the spi

You mentioned Spore. Aside from the fact that it's a single-player game with noticeable load times when visiting worlds (which were procedurally generated anyway, so there aren't exactly "world files" that you can open up), those are much smaller than a real planet. I couldn't find any statistics on Spore planets, but there are statistics for Kerbin (from Kerbal Space Program). That massive planet that you can explore and is mostly empty? A tenth of the size of Earth. And again, single-player game.

Say your idea simplifying data is accurate. If the players were to spread out enough, how many would it take to bring the server to its knees? How much land could be simulated around each person? Minecraft does it in chunks, but those chunks are miniscule compared to the potential size of the world. Minecraft servers typically hold less than 100 players at any time.

The only saving grace I see at this time is that they're planning for it to be a browser-based game, which if nothing else means less strain on user hard drives.
