How are you gonna be compressing or simplifying the land when people can be anywhere on it at any time? This isn't a single-player game where you can neatly pack up locations that aren't near you, nor is it a space sim that is 99% featureless emptiness. If the idea is that you can literally go anywhere on the Earth, you're gonna need massive amounts of data that can be easily changed to accommodate user-made modifications such as buildings.

You can just pack up location that are not near any currently logged in player.

Building dont necessarily need to change the terrain data either.

You mentioned Spore. Aside from the fact that it's a single-player game with noticeable load times when visiting worlds (which were procedurally generated anyway, so there aren't exactly "world files" that you can open up), those are much smaller than a real planet. I couldn't find any statistics on Spore planets, but there are statistics for Kerbin (from Kerbal Space Program). That massive planet that you can explore and is mostly empty? A tenth of the size of Earth. And again, single-player game.

KSP planets are stored on the hard disk. This game will probably feature procedurally generated terrain. Think Noctis.

Say your idea simplifying data is accurate. If the players were to spread out enough, how many would it take to bring the server to its knees? How much land could be simulated around each person? Minecraft does it in chunks, but those chunks are miniscule compared to the potential size of the world. Minecraft servers typically hold less than 100 players at any time.

One would assume that a project like this has been developed to run on server farms with much more processing power than an average PC (especially at handling concurrency). The game could use a similar technique to Minecraft (assuming the game did not need deformable terrain) and (assuming it would just regenerate "chunks" when needed) people should be able to spread out as far as they want without causing any issues, and without requiring any storage of terrain on hard disk.

Neonivek was pretty much correct when he said "It doesn't matter how big it is when it just becomes static" (assuming static means that the terrain itself can not be altered).

I cant think of a reason why the terrain is so hard to do (it almost seems like on of the easiest parts of the game to do).

Play it anywhere, on your phone, on your computer, on your game consoles.
I'm just trying to wonder whether this is even possible. The only way I could see it working is if this is a browser-based game, and thus you could "play" it anywhere so long as you have a browser. But that seems like a very big cop-out.

Of course, I could click on the link to view more, but it wants me to "log in" by providing an email address. I'm not going to let my email be harvested and used to send me spam.

They're (allegedly) developing it in HTML5, so yes, it's going to be browser based. If you want to see the whole pitch, you can watch the video linked earlier in the thread. Also, as long as you enter something formated like an email address (e.g. q@q.com), you can see the inner page.

Requiring an email to view more about a supposed project on a page with very little information seems close to phishing...

My email is "RequiringAnEmailAddressToViewMoreInformationIsAReallyBadIdea@HelpfulAdvice.com" if anyone asks  ;)

I should point out that, hilariously, it doesn't remember if you've logged in, so you have to reenter your email each time you close your browser.
EDIT: Also that making the sockpuppets does count for refferals. Thats.. this is looking great....

They promise the universe but their tech demo looks like Diablo. I know they are supposedly placeholder graphics, but that is not even remotely how I envisioned a "universe simulator".

The graphical demo (or whatever it was, with the spaceships) looks like a "My First Game" project.

Quote from: Website
The biggest challenge actually has to do with the fact that we plan on implementing an ever expanding tree of technology into the game. Unlike most games, you'd don't simply write the game until you're done; if you need a bow and arrow, we cannot simply code a longbow into the core of the game. That would create an enormous beast of a code base that would eventually become completely unmanageable at best. Instead, we will be creating a suite of tools that link generic game code to objects

Erm, its called Object Orientated programming? I am not even sure what they are saying here, but OO programming is perfect to solve a problem like this, and they want to go out and invent a new method that sounds like OO programming anyway.

Quote from: Website
In fact, it was on reddit that I found out that scientists think they know how to create a warp drive.
*headdesk*

I have little faith that this game will get anywhere, or that they even really know what they are doing. Has the developer(s?) given any indication that they even have any experience in game development beyond some tinkering as a kid (along with the "predictions")?

I don't want to sound too negative (although it probably does) but it just sounds like someone with a huge idea and not much else than that.

HEY GUYS! I CAN COPY AND PASTE CODE FROM HTML 5 TUTORIALS! PLEEZE GIVE ME MONEES SO I CAN CONTINUE BEING A LAZY BUM WHO COPIES CODE AND ART ASSETS.

Like, really, that's what all the visuals in that video are about. It starts with "Hey guys, look at this demo I didn't make! Isn't it cool, despite looking terrible, oh, and it doesn't really work yet but it will in a few years, at which point I will do something like it!" Followed by "Now look at this HTML tech demo I made by following the first chapter of an HTML 5 tutorial website! As you can see, client-server communication is easy in HTML 5! Which is why I'm using it! Also, I can't be bothered to make a simple test image of my own, so here's some graphics I nicked from an old game! As you can see, I is gud game maker; can haz muney?"

Step 1:
Learn the material in these 2 links:
http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/443660/Building-a-basic-HTML5-client-server-application
http://www.w3schools.com/html/html5_canvas.asp

Step 2:
Make crappy demo with spritesheet animation and networking

Step 3:
Demand money

Step 4:
PROFIT

It's not a case of raising red flags. It's more a case of coming across a solar system flooded with messages in every conceivable language on every spectrum warning of quarantine of grey-goo replicators and guarded by a fleet of heavily armed advanced alien spacecraft consisting of so many ships it appears to be a Dyson sphere.

I don't think this kind of game can be made as he wants. It's a very interesting concept, though. Kinda reminds me of Shores of Hazeron, and if you've played it you know what kind of problems it has... even with "very limited" possibilities.

I don't want to be cruel, but this is not going to happen. At least as it is planned right now.

Thanks! I was racking my brain for the last 2 days trying to remember what game I was thinking of. Hazeron. Ah good times. Never was able to get the bloody thing working. Was able to get it working long enough to make a horrible monstrosity with legs for a face though. That may have been a glitch too.
