Yeah there's definitely going to be a map editor.  According to one of the devs:

We'll ship the game with a level editor. That will allow you to make maps.

Not 100% sure on these but it might also allow you to:
Make campaigns, by stringing maps together.
Customize heroes on those maps.
Customize leader on those maps.
Customize items on those maps.
Script some stuff.

We'll look into more modding support - game resource modding, steam workshop - after we release the game.

On the level editor, please note the disclaimer at the bottom of the store page. Do not expect the level editor to be as polished as the game.

You will be getting pretty much the same editor as we used to make the campaign and scenarios we've shipped with though.

The new Eternal Lords expansion is coming out next month! With it comes two new races (Tigrans and Frostlings), a new class (the necromancer) and a new PBEM feature. I was wondering if there'd be interest in a PBEM match once the expansion comes out?

PBEM is already out in a beta state with the beta patch that you can opt into, but I'd rather wait until the expansion comes out before diving into the game again.

The expansion looks good, but my biggest problem with the game is the tactical battle system. AoW III. battles are just plain boring compared to the AoW: SM battles IMHO. AFAIK they won't upgrade anything with regard to the combat system, but again, it must be good enough if the game is so popular.

I prefer AoW3 combat over AoW2 for what it's worth. It feels sleeker and smoother without detracting from the depth of the previous game.
