If I remember correctly, dragon age 2 uses a median between the two.
You don't share 100% of the gained xp with unused party members, but there's an hard limit to the deviation, the unused ones are ensured to not fall behind by much.

I always thought that was a clever system.
We need to come up with an equation for that to work on our party's leveling system. :3

Probably not as much exp, maybe none at all.  If it were 1 person down, maybe, but half the party getting better than the other half... eh...

I'll probably give out 1/6 exp rate per encounter, done up to the whole party.

For instance, if an encounter nets you 600 exp total, then every player gets 100.
If 2 people are missing, then the encounter is only worth 400, and each player gets ~66 exp, even the players who aren't there.

In other word, everyone gains the same amount of exp, if they're present or not, but you get 'full party bonus' because the more are playing, the more exp everyone gets.  So, the game sort of 'slows down' overall when people are missing, and everyone shares the same exp pool.

Considering we have less players (and therefore solve situations faster) and we play more, we should reap an equal amount of rewards anyway.

It's less about realism and more about balance and pacing.  I don't want people able to effectively 'skip levels' by not attending, but at the same time I don't want people to be too far ahead of others.

I'm just afraid of doing menial side-quests week after week after week because half the party is always missing. That is all.
