It makes me think of the whole Civil Rights movement in the 60s, I remember from documentaries and stuff that they also sent in the national guard at points. Don't remember if it made things more tense or not or what.

Also, that BBC article seems to imply the whole crowd was violent, mainly through being so brief and lack of fuller information.
