Well I figured if we needed to spell out that Rick Perry was corrupt, then other extremely obvious things are fair game...

The surprising part isn't the corruption, it's the possible 119 years in jail.

Do you think he'll spend more than a month or two actually behind bars?

It'd be a fairly impressive about face from the legal system if he did spend the maximum sentence behind bars. Probably just a temporary pirouette, but still.

Be somewhat of a minor about face if the bugger gets sentenced at all, but :V

I could kinda' see the onion headline now: "Never before seen legal precedent: Rich white fucker actually spends more time behind bars for inflicting massive societal damage than poor black bastard does for robbing corner liquor store!"

I bet you he resigns in 'disgrace' and retires with a big fat pension.

The guy is a potential presidential candidate even, though he is more of an also-ran now and given his poor performance last time, I don't see him doing well next time either.

Not that I'd vote for him and those corruption charges would make me vote for him even less.

Do you think he'll spend more than a month or two actually behind bars?

Even a month or two would be nice. One of his huge pushes has been insuring "politician criminals" in the state get "lengthy" sentences, and in general he's argued the courts should opt for the max possible sentence at all time, so while it would be entirely appropriate for him to get the full sentence he obviously won't.

But just getting convicted and spending any time in jail at all will probably ruin his political chances (says the guy from the state where Buddy Cianci practically got elected straight out of jail back into office. >_<)

Also, the MINIMUM sentence for the first charge alone is 5 years. If he's found guilty, he'll be sentenced to at least that (probably won't serve the full term, of course, but you know how it goes)

The second charge is a minimum of 2 years. So if he's found guilty on both counts, that is at least a 7 year minimum, and he's obviously and admittedly and publicly guilty of far more than the bare minimum of this sort of crime, so it would be pretty sick if he comes away with the minimum especially after insuring that any Democrats in the state found guilty of crimes serve essentially the maximum sentence.

I was pretty gobsmacked. To not beat around the bush, I thought most of Texas was rabidly conservative. At least conservative enough that a random jury pool wouldn't have a chance of sustaining an indictment against Perry.

The rural areas, yeah, pretty much. But we librals rule the cities; especially Austin. Austin is like, libral hipster capital of the south. Austin is growing massively quickly, as it still has relatively low cost of living coupled with a lot of programming & hardware companies. NVidia, AMD, Dell, Google, IBM, ect. Sort of an up and coming southern tech hub. And so naturally, most everyone who moves here is 'teh libral elites' all the radio folk been warnin us about. And so, Rick Perry is imprisoned in a city that hates him. :P

That combined with the whole demographic bomb thing are why Texas is likely to become a blue state in a decade or two.

Also, pffthahahaha
Upon his indictment, Perry must turn himself in to the Travis County Jail, where he will be booked, fingerprinted and have his mugshot taken. A pre-trial hearing will be arranged within the next few weeks.
