So, is USA a police state or not?
Depends on the state really.

"Hi yeah, I'm just wondering who are you guys protecting right now?"
"Who are we protecting? The citizens of Ferguson."
"So you're literally firing at them with tear gas and rubber bullets at them while they're in their own homes."
"Yeah we're walking right into their homes and shooting them."
"Wow, that is um... Really really professional way to deal with that isn't it."
"Yeah that's your view of it."
SalmonGod, a new catalyst for change has appeared. Angry ignoramuses with well intentions can swing the argument either way.

Police officer who shot Michael Brown is named Darren Wilson, Ferguson Police have released the name of the officer.

Another shooting of a possibly unarmed young man this time by Salt Lake city police has taken place.

That's literally KGB level of police oppression.

Have USA and USSR switched places when I wasn't watching?

Just like in St. Louis, they're saying all this stuff. "We got a call about a guy brandishing a gun in the area." Okay, let's see that call. "He may have had a weapon." Well did he? "His actions may have been threatening, verbally or physically." Can you prove that? He seems to have been in violation of his probation, not a healthy thing to do in most parts of the country. We simply need more information, but the same stone walls have been erected down there.

Again, literally KGB level of oppression.

Not if you have an unfortunate case of melanin -_-

It's a comparison that's made a lot recently, but bears being voiced again: Compare the recent police murders of black men (for being "belligerent" or "vaguely threatening" in most cases) to the open-carry idiots who walked into a Texas Chipotle with AR-15s earlier this year and didn't even get the police called on them. Or the guy who walked into a movie theater in Aurora, Colorado two years ago, killed 12 and wounded 70, and managed to be taken alive.

These are all unique circumstances in different police jurisdictions, of course. Any one individual event could be argued away as unfortunate or irrelevant. But it's not hard to see the trend whereby the whiter you are, the more you're given the benefit of the doubt.

The Onion knows how it is.

Strongarming shop owners is not a capital offense in Missouri. So what?

Doesn't matter if he strongarmed a shop owner or not. At the time of the incident, he was unarmed and surrendering. Seems like typical Fox Noose to bring up a victim's past as an attempt to justify whatever happened to them.

At a press conference Friday afternoon, authorities said the police officer who shot Brown did not know he was a robbery suspect at the time.

"I am incensed," Laura Keys, 50, told The St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "I can't believe this is the tactic they are using, bringing up a robbery to make the victim look like he was the person who created this whole mess."

Fox noos didn't actually talk about the Police Officer's defence, they just said that these allegations could further inspire violence. Mass media finds riots, robbery and violence more interesting than legal arguments. It's basically universal condemnation of the LEO all round.

Yeah... looking back through U.S. history, I've never been able to find this mystical "once was" moment that everyone pines over.  Things have gotten worse (in my opinion), but that doesn't mean that they were ever very good in comparison to the rest of the developed world.

Either better PR or rather good propaganda, though. Think the states have always been pretty good at saying they're the land of the free (implied: Everyone else isn't, so don't turn to those godless freedom hating foreigners for anything), but less so on the whole being it part. Plus there seems to be more folks than normal who have a great deal of their identity wrapped around the concept and are very willing to bend their perception of reality to meet it, ha.

That, and I guess it's not so bad so long as you're you average non-poor WASP type critter. Eh.
