The actual question is "Could we get a gun license system through" and... right now, and for a while now, there's been significant efforts to prevent pretty much anything like that, here in the states. There's apparently a lot of people willing to make tremendous stinks about how they couldn't live with a gun license system.

E: Also, yeah, caring about the finer points of Shia theology would probably make striking a deal with Iran a helluva' lot easier/more likely.

Caring about the 2nd amendment when crafting gun control is like caring about finer points of Shia theology when crafting worship control.
Point is it's very, very relevant.

The low-calibres being unregulated thing wouldn't work because the amendment states 'arms' not 'low-caliber longarms'.
So, if the congress decided down the road they wanted to restrict the low-caliber longarms too, they'd have a precedent because they already restricted the other firearms & the constitution doesn't mention any difference between the two, (arms & longarms).

It can't just be appearances, it has to maintain the core of the matter. The right of gun ownership is in the constitution, and making the reversal of that interpretation a part of your comprehensive gun control plan is loading it down with more weight than it needs. Working around it is easier & more acceptable to the other side.

Political polarization is continuing at a rapid pace. There has, in addition, been a significant growth in the number of people who don't just hate their political opponents, but also see them as a threat to the nation. In general, there are currently more people on the left than the right.

I wonder about much further back, like up to a century back? You know, to see the overall trend whether it's a cycle or compare how bad it's been in the past.

Yeah... the last few years in the U.S. has been reminding me a lot of stories about the Civil War.  How deep the rift of political ideology was, to the point that families would split apart and fight on opposing sides.  I've seen a lot of that going on.  Young adults abandoning all hope for their Fox News-brainwashed parents, and breaking off contact.  Best friends for decades turning into enemies because one supports the privilege of the 1% (because they hold aspirations of joining them one day), and the other finding that stance too abhorrent to associate with.  It's like everyone is making their final choice as to which side they want to be on.

Man, they must feel so lonely. :/
So do these folks.

Their main talking points seem to gravitate around the fact that the Democrats were the party of slavery. 150 years ago. And ignores the Great Realignment of the 1960's.

I love too how they "celebrate" Black Republicans, and then have to look long and hard to find any. Out of 535 Congresscritters (278 of them Republicans), there is precisely ONE black Republican, Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), who was appointed by the Governor. There are *no* black Republicans in the House.
And as someone pointed out, when Eric Cantor departs, there will be no non-Christians in the Republican ranks in Congress either.

That's your "big tent" GOP, folks: 99.6% white, 92.8% male and 100% Christian.

let's wait for the civil war to happen so the constitution is smashed into bits, something more modern is drafted up and the states aren't a bundle of knots animal or otherwise in regards to parties

hell at this point i'd be pleased with vermin supreme made an absolute monarch saudi arabia style

Meh, the Left has always had a problem with in-fighting among different minority groups. It's fascinating reading about how the Socialist movement, Women's Suffrage movement and civil rights movements allied in the early 20th century, but the Socialists felt like the women should be more cheerleaders than activists, and the white women leading the suffrage movement really didn't care to have black women prominently featured in their rallies.

There is a certain danger that exists when activism is elite-driven, that it's not fully inclusive.
Of course, there is equal danger when activism is grassroots, that it can become unhinged mob mentality and prone to the darkest impulses of xenophobia, racism and know-nothingism.

Well, the NRBA seems to be more devoted to desperately trying to grab black voters rather than, you know, defending the rights of blacks within the GOP. I wouldn't be surprised if it was led by whites. :p
