It is a shame, though. It's been argued that Japan benefited greatly from their lack of a military, as the money that would otherwise be spent there went to other sectors of the economy.
Money they had because they knew they had the United States military to defend them. I wish more nation would follow suit.

I'm not worried about them having an army. I'm more worried about their economy. I'm pretty sure they PAY the US to have their military there. Paying for their own forces as well would break their economy.

If Japan rearms itself it will become America's new lapdog best friend in the Far East, perhaps even more so than Australia.

Atleast Australia got to determine their own constitution.

Yeah the Japanese should have a public referendum or similar on their constitution but I'm with the Japanese Communist Party on this particular issue. Japan shouldn't even have a "self defence force".

Because a sternly worded letter will keep the chinese in check, although seeing how they are communists they might have ulterior motives for disarming japan.

The point is they shouldn't be forced to have a "Self Defense Force" they should have a military, like every other sovereign nation. Why is japan the only country in the world currently looked down upon if they want to control their own constitution and military, anyway?

China has been trying to project their influence around the seas there for some time now.  "If the US gets to do that shit, so can we."
Japan arming up is going to put a damper on that in the long run, most likely...  if the US or some other endorses em with military tech and training.

In that regard Japan is just unlucky to be an island. Without being at the frontline of the Cold War, Germany wouldn't have been encouraged to build an army either, at least not until much later.

Just to let you know, it isn't like anyone else has really been opposed to Japan re-militarizing for the past, oh, twenty years or so (Except for the Chinese and maybe Koreans because Imperialist Japanese Devils and whatnot). Hell, the Americans have basically been pushing them to do so and to start making nuclear weapons. Really, most of the opposition has come from within Japan itself, partly for moral reasons and partly because gigantic amounts of money/resources can be saved by having a minimal military and instead allowing the money to flow into the real economy. Peace, after all, is a great way to become rich; just look at 19th-20th century Switzerland or Sweden.

Considering though... it really does look like we are setting up for World War III if Japan is arming for the purposes of 'containing' China.

I kinda doubt China wants WWIII on their doorstep no matter what.
