WaPo on the GOP's heraculean task in 2016.
Reading this article, while it is easy to cheer and think this means the downfall of Republicans forever, the underlying message is that sometimes a party goes from the brink of death to POWER OVERWHELMING!!! The only question is how will they come out of it by the end? Will we one day see an economically right wing, socially progressive GOP, or perhaps economically more socialist, but keeping their conservative values, or will they manage to claw the general public back towards them?
I personally believe letting one party have such a strangle hold is a horrible idea. Now, if only there was a political party that was fiscally conservative but socially liberal... Maybe with a candidate that rhymes with Bary Lohnson.

I am a little amazed there aren't more socially conservative, economically left wing religious nutjobs over there. After all, Jesus was all about helping the poor, paying your taxes, and hating merchant bankers. He was pretty much a socialist!

American Christians....aren't exactly in consensus on that point.

Anyway, social conservationism doesn't have a very strong history in the US to begin with. Generally, whichever factions back it tend to ride a wave of demagogic rage for one or two elections, only for people to come to their senses and drop whatever issue is being focused on.

All Popes before Francis. Even Francis if you squint and look at absolutes.

Anyway, while I am disdainful of Harry Yonson and the Libertine crew, they suck votes from Reps. Don't underestimate how long a single party can dominate American politics Max. It's happened for decades at a time.

Well looking at your list of presidents it seems parties are holding the office for shorter and shorter periods of time... So those days may very well be over. There could very well be a day when taking two elections in a row is somewhat remarkable! But this is from an outsiders perspective...

Interestingly looking at Australian Prime Ministers we never really had very long reigns, with the exception of Menzies, but he had a world war to rally people about.

And if you think Catholics were well-regarded for most of US history, you'd be a bit surprised.  There were even serious questions raised during John F. Kennedy's campaign as late as 1960 whether America could accept a Catholic President.  An entire nativist political party was founded in the 19th century around the notion of "papists" stealing our jobs and undermining the Republic, though thankfully it never really went anywhere in a political environment thoroughly dominated by the peculiar institution.

I am very familiar with the anti-Catholic vibe. I am even know JFK even pledged that he would not be loyal to the pope. I am acquainted with the history of my own city, where the coming Irish catholic horde was regarded as utter scum by the early city-dwellers.

But the popes were the first people I could think of who fit that profile. Technically most US churches, but there are many who ignore the liberal economic side.

There was short, but intense scrutiny towards Mormonism with Romney, too.

An electorate suspicious of Catholicism? What an alien place... I'm pretty sure we only recently had our first non-christian PM.

Oh, they've never had a non-christian. They just were all for protestant and all it's myriad types, and suspicious of the Papists.

Yea, we are pretty much the inverse then, no Protestants, all Catholics, with a single Atheist thrown in for fun.

And Mormons, although Mormons admittedly are very strange.

Atheism is still a big turn-off. MSH linked that article on it a while back.

Just this once, I want to see a politician that is an openly practicing voodoo priest. When the media asks questions about it, he should proudly point out that he has extensive experience working with zombies, and will thus be a shoe-in for congress.
