The main problem is suicide is normally a temporary impulse, right?  We want to prevent those, because people normally get over it and are then glad they didn't go through with it.  People who cling to the desire to off themselves for a long time probably deserve the right to do so.

I don't think psychiatric evaluation is even necessary.  Just require the intent be filed to initiate a waiting period before the state is willing to grant permission/assistance.  Then it's completely a matter of personal agency over one's own life, and the whole subjective prejudice where desire to die constitutes mental illness can't factor in.  One of the conditions on filing this intent is they must agree to some level of monitoring during the waiting period, and certain types of affairs must be in order, for example children must have guardian arrangements.  Certain factors can reduce the wait time, such as terminal illness or life-long prison sentences.

I'm sure huge holes can be punched in this idea, but it's just off the top of my head as a starting point.

Plenty of people wouldn't opt in to this, but for anyone at all to do so would be an improvement.  I think that having professional assistance and a guarantee that the process wouldn't be interrupted would be a pretty strong incentive, though, and others could also be offered, such as assistance with finalizing one's personal affairs.

I guess you could measure their levels of dopamine and serotonin and if they don't reach a specified minimum then they aren't allowed to commit suicide... So you know, go for a jog before you talk to your doctor.

Or just offer it only to people with terminal illnesses.

Which is only a solution if you don't think prisoners ought to have the right to end their own lives.

Offer it to anyone. It's not our place to dictate whether someone should be able to kill themselves regardless of their illness. Temporary impulse or not that should be under their control and they should be able to do it with dignity.

So the solution to depressives is to let them kill themselves? That's certainly one way: If they all kill themselves, then no one will want to commit suicide! Problem solved!

Quick, solve the budget crisis next.

Try to convince them by all means, but it's their right to kill themselves if they want. They should also have the right to do so with dignity. I think the basic human right to life should be balanced with the human right to die with dignity, and that right should be held by everyone.

Negative duty agnostic philosophers, conscientious objectors to the most dangerous conflicts of ideas in our time.

I'm not sure if this makes me "negative duty" though, I'd try to convince anyone I could that suicide is foolish (though not in all cases, sometimes it is the best course of action) and I feel that it is my duty to do so. I think though ultimate responsibility must always lie with the individual. Prisoners do not have that responsibility currently in the United States.

That would not go down very well with the Loyalist community.

But assisted suicide will always meet this sort of resistance no matter where it's proposed. Out of interest, can it be legalised on a state-level?

I'm not sure if this makes me "negative duty" though,

It doesn't make you "negative duty", it makes you "negative duty agnostic", you are agnostic to the idea that we need to avoid assisting people in suicide which is a negative duty (duty not to do something).  You say it's entirely up to their conscience, absolving us of obligation while someone who is not negative duty agnostic would say that we as a society have an obligation to avoid killing them unless overruled by a greater obligation.

I have half a degree in engineering.  I can do this with a 600 billion dollar budget and 25 years.
