Yeah, it's only when you have 2 liberal parties that you get a vote spoiler. If you have two Democrats, they go all Highlander and then when the ACTUAL, true-for-real-no-kidding election comes, it's one Democrat and one Republican.

Goddamn Ohio. Why you always gotta be the linchpin?

We're just awesome like that.

I just hope we get a democratic governor out of this, our current one is kind of a scumbag.

You know if I was an American I would try to run as president on a far right libertarian platform, promising to cut the fuck out of tax and being critical of any social justice movement, getting media attention saying controversial things, essentially Rand 2: The Randdoning, just for the sake of trying to split the conservative vote a little more.

And the best bit is that if somehow I ever managed to freeze hell over and get elected, I would turn coat, raise taxes and bathe in the tears of my own voters.

I would just be the worst US candidate.

Bit of an understatement, that. Of course, there's only one reason that a politician gets a moniker like "Honest John", and it's never complimentary.

That's just what the Republicans say anyway.

Couldn't win more votes then Vermin Supreme. Besides, you can always run in the primaries on the platform of "If nominated I will move". You still couldn't actually run for President, being foreign-born, but you could divide the vote of morons nonetheless.

That is so silly that you need to be born in the US to run. Heck our current Prime minister was born in London and not a single fuck is given. It didn't even ever come up in political debate.
Damn nationalist paranoia, I want to turn your country into my own socialist paradise dammit!

You don't have to necessarily be born in the US to run, you just have to be born an American citizen. John McCain, for example, was born in Panama (as I recall).

It's an artifact from when the US was terrified it'd be taken over by a foreign power in its early years, and no one's bothered to change the laws since then.

They must think injustice absurd; above all, they must think it startling. They must retain the violence of a virgin astonishment. When the pessimist looks at any infamy, it is to him, after all, only a repetition of the infamy of existence. But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

Bet that went over well with the conspiracy nutters. They are probably saying their nation is being controlled by various foreign powers like Panama and Hawaii.

As long as you are given U.S. citizenship at birth, you're good to go. I personally would change the law so that if you weren't born a citizen, you must first become one, and maybe spend 2 additional years in the US on top of the existing requirement or something.

You can't even hold most other public offices at two years citizenship. The Schwarzenegger Amendment would have set it at 20 years.

It's an artifact from when the US was terrified it'd be taken over by a foreign power in its early years, and no one's bothered to change the laws since then.
And now* that blind, fervent patriotism has become a fixture of the American culture, it'll never be changed. It'd be a lot like repealing the 2nd Amendment**. It no longer matters what the actual effect is, it's adherence to the tradition that's viewed as the American ideal. It doesn't matter what you propose replacing it with - any challenge would be UnAmerican.

*Decades ago, really. It's just still true.
**Not to say the 2nd Amendment is anything like as arbitrary. I'm picking it as a sacred cow, irrationally defended, because it's what the Founding Fathers allegedly wanted. You could replace the 2nd Amendment with an even stronger guarantee of rights to weapon ownership, and the change would still be torn apart. I really don't want a tangential fight over this comparison. It's got nothing to do with the actual merits of the Amendment.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

I thought he was born in US-held territory of Panama though? George Romney was born in Mexico though.

Article II, Section 1, Clause 5 of the Constitution sets the requirements to hold office. A president must:
  • be a natural-born citizen of the United States;
  • be at least thirty-five years old;
  • have been a permanent resident in the United States for at least fourteen years.
The Constitution states they must be a "Natural Born Citizen", which has never been fully addressed. I personally favor the "Born in America" argument, because it would exclude Ted Cruz. Ted Cruz was born in Alberta, adding another name to a long distinguished, list of terrible people Canada has foisted on the US.
